1. Functional understanding of space : Representing spatial knowledge using concepts grounded in an agent's purpose
Abstract : This thesis examines the role of function in representations of space by robots - that is, dealing directly and explicitly with those aspects of space and objects in space that serve some purpose for the robot. It is suggested that taking function into account helps increase the generality and robustness of solutions in an unpredictable and complex world, and the suggestion is affirmed by several instantiations of functionally conceived spatial models. 2. A Functional Approach to Hardware Software Co-Design
Abstract : Developing software for embedded systems presents quite the challenge---not only do these systems demand good knowledge of the hardware they run on, but their limited resources also make it difficult to achieve efficiency. For embedded systems with different kinds of processing elements, the challenge is even greater; the presence of heterogeneous elements both raises all of the issues associated with homogeneous systems, and may also cause non-uniform system development and capability. 3. Neurocognitive Foundations of Child and Adult Number Processing : Neural Correlates and Functional Circuits Across Typical Development
Abstract : The ability to mentally represent the exact numerosity of up to four perceived objects, as well as approximately estimating differences in numerical magnitude, appears to constitute a core-cognitive number sense. Symbolic representations of number (e.g. READ MORE

4. On Integrated Product Architectures: Representation, modelling and evaluation
Abstract : Continued growth in the commercial aerospace industry makes aircraft manufacturers look for low maintenance, fuel efficient airplanes and aircraft engines are an important factor in the maintenance and fuel costs. The drive for operating cost reduction leads to innovative engine architectures that can place very different requirements on supplier provided components. READ MORE

5. Functional Representation for Design Support: A Design Theory Perspective
Abstract : To cope with the increased competitiveness in mature businesses, and even in immature, companies have to offer customers better and cheaper products with more functionality at shorter intervals, than their competitors. The reduced development time creates a need to utilise resources more efficiently, be more flexible, both when it comes to work-processes and products developed, and to create, cherish and communicate knowledge/experiences in such a way that it supports on-going and future design activities.
