  1. 1. Young Star Clusters and Clumps in the Local Universe : The effect of galactic environment on star formation

    Author : Matteo Messa; Angela Adamo; Göran Östlin; Steven Longmore; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxies; Star formation; Star clusters; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Stars do not form in isolation, but rather out of a hierarchical structure set by the turbulence of the interstellar medium. At the densest peak of the gas distribution, the star formation process can produce young star clusters (YSCs), which are gravitationally bound systems of stars with mass between ~100 and 106 MSun and typical size of few parsecs. 2. 2. Star clusters as engines of galaxy evolution

    Author : Mattia Sirressi; Angela Adamo; Matthew Hayes; Paul Crowther; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Extragalactic astronomy; Galaxies; Star formation; Interstellar medium; Stellar feedback; Ultraviolet surveys; Hubble Space Telescope; Spectroscopy; Data analysis; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Feedback in star forming galaxies is the key process that regulates how many stars form given the available gas reservoir. The radiation, energy and momentum released by the stellar activity and the active galactic nuclei change the physical properties of the gas in the galaxy such as the ionisation state, the density and the kinematics. 3. 3. Molecular gas and ionizing radiation in star-forming galaxies

    Author : Johannes Puschnig; Matthew Hayes; Göran Östlin; Amélie Saintonge; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; astrophysics; galaxies; star formation; starburst; interstellar medium; Lyman continuum; Lyman alpha; reionization; gravitational instability; molecular gas; clump formation; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : In cosmic history, some of the major changes such as reionization were driven by baryons (i.e. the stars and gas in galaxies), despite the fact that they contribute only few percent to the total mass-energy budget in the Universe. READ MORE

  4. 4. Super Star Clusters in Blue Compact Galaxies : Evidence for a near-infrared flux excess and properties of the starburst phase

    Author : Angela Adamo; Göran Östlin; Erik Zackrisson; Richard de Grjis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; starburst galaxy-extragalactic star clusters-dwarf merger; Astronomy and astrophysics; Astronomi och astrofysik; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Luminous Blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are metal-poor actively star-forming systems, characterised by bright ultraviolet and blue luminosities. Hubble Space Telescope high-resolution data have revealed that the luminous star-forming knots in these galaxies are composed of hundreds of young massive star clusters. READ MORE

  5. 5. Star Formation and feedback at key physical scales for galaxy evolution

    Author : Lorenza Della Bruna; Angela Adamo; Göran Östlin; Monica Relaño Pastor; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Galaxies; Star Formation; Stellar Feedback; HII regions; ISM; Astronomy; astronomi;

    Abstract : Feedback from young, massive stars plays an essential role in the self-regulation of star formation in galaxies, and in shaping the galaxies' global properties. This phenomenon originates at small scales, surrounding the stars, but has been observed to be effective up to galactic-wide scales. READ MORE
