  1. 1. Invading Herbivory. Effects of the Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) in Asian Wetlands

    Author : Nils Carlsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gastropoda; invasive species; golden apple snail; herbivory; wetland functioning; biodiversity; sustainable control; indigenous predators; size-dependent competitive ability; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; Hydrobiology; aquatic ecology; marine biology;

    Abstract : The South American golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) was intentionally introduced to aquacultures in South East Asia to produce snails for human consumption, but the aquatic snails soon escaped and started to consume large amounts of rice seedlings. The aim of this thesis was to quantify the effects of this invasive herbivore on aquatic plants in natural wetlands since previous research has focused on effects of the snail in rice fields. 2. 2. Structuring factors for macroinvertebrate communities and the importance for ecosystem processing

    Author : Pia Hertonsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ephemeroptera; competition; Predation risk; brownification; invasive sp.; decomposition; grazing; growth; gastropoda; mortality; amphipoda; isopoda;

    Abstract : Aquatic macroinvertebrates play important roles in our ecosystems and are essential for the ecosystem processing. An improved knowledge of structuring factors, such as competition and predation, and the way in which they operates in the macroinvertebrate community is crucial for our understanding of not only the macroinvertebrates but also the ecosystem in general. 3. 3. Shell repair as a response to attempted predation in some Palaeozoic and younger gastropods

    Author : Anna Lindström; John S. Peel; Jan Ove R. Ebbestad; Euan N. K. Clarkson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Gastropoda; predation; shell morphology; shell repair; Palaeozoic; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Traces of unsuccessful predatory attacks can be found in the hard parts of shell-bearing organisms as repaired shell injuries and are often preserved in the fossil record. These repaired shell injuries can help to deduce the relationship between predator and prey in the past. READ MORE

  4. 4. Functional Morphology of Gastropods and Bivalves

    Author : Jenny Sälgeback; Lars Holmer; John S. Peel; Jan-Ove Ebbestad; Enrico Savazzi; Anders Warén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Earth sciences; Gastropoda; Bivalvia; functional morphology; constructional morphology; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : Functional morphology analyzes the relationships between form and function in organisms. However, a comprehensive analysis of any organic structure requires an integrated approach to morphology. For this purpose constructional morphology was developed, where function, phylogeny and construction together explain form. READ MORE
