  1. 1. Reproductive isolation at contact zones

    Author : Samuel Perini; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hybrid zone; gene flow; genetic variants; mating; local adaptation; marine species; speciation;

    Abstract : Speciation is among the most important evolutionary processes that contribute to biodiversity. It involves the formation of new species that have become reproductively isolated through a process that is not linear and varies in time and space. READ MORE

  2. 2. On Speciation in Birds – Genomic Signatures across Space and Time

    Author : Martin Stervander; MEMEG; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; colonization; islands; isolation; introgressive hybridization; sympatry; natural selection; bill morphology; coalescence-based analyses; DNA sequencing; birds; divergence; Speciation;

    Abstract : The process of speciation is a cornerstone in evolutionary biology. In Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, he described how he imagined that a new species would evolve to fill an empty niche. This focus on ecology shifted with Mayr towards the importance of isolation, and for many decades the geographic modes of speciation were debated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Isolation and functional characterization of Hrp65-binding proteins in Chironomus tentans

    Author : Eva Kiesler; Neus Visa; Benjamin Blencowe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gene expression; RNA-binding proteins; mRNA biogenesis; nuclear structure; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : It is well-established that the organization of nuclear components influences gene expression processes, yet little is known about the mechanisms that contribute to the spatial co-ordination of nuclear activities. The salivary gland cells of Chironomus tentans provide a suitable model system for studying gene expression in situ, as they allow for direct visualization of the synthesis, processing and export of a specific protein-coding transcript, the Balbiani ring (BR) pre-mRNA, in a nuclear environment in which chromatin and non-chromatin structures can easily be distinguished. 4. 4. Population divergence at small spatial scales : – theoretical and empirical investigations in perch

    Author : Sara Bergek; Mats Björklund; Teija Aho; Sarah Goodacre; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Perca fluviatilis L.; Perch; Small scale genetic differentiation; Morphometrics; Isolation by distance; Dispersal; Gene flow; Microsatellites; Spatiotemporal stability; Barriers; Biology; Biologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : Genetically structured populations arise when gene flow between groups of individuals is hindered by geographical, behavioural or temporal barriers. The identification of such groups is important for understanding evolution and has large implications for conservation concern. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cardiomyocyte Cell Cycle, Renewal and Isolation

    Author : Stuart Walsh; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; binucleation; Cardiomyocytes; surface marker; troponin-T; mitosis; microarray; cell cycle; FACS;

    Abstract : Heart disease results from the loss of cardiomyocytes following myocardial damage and is a leading cause of death worldwide. Stimulating the endogenous regeneration of cardiomyocytes or isolating them from in vitro culture is an attractive therapeutic strategy. READ MORE
