  1. 1. Go with your gut : The human intestinal microbiota, international travel, Campylobacter and ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae

    Author : Christian Kampmann; Hilpi Rautelin; Johan Dicksved; Lars Engstrand; Johan Tham; Johan Ursing; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; travel; travellers´diarrhea; microbiota; Campylobacter; Campylobacter jejuni; ST353CC; colonization resistance; enteritis; infection; Enterobacteriaceae; Christensenellaceae; Lachnospiraceae; whole genome sequence; vegetarian; bacterial resistance; ESBL; Extended spectrum beta-lactamase; probiotics; intestinal decolonization; eradication treatment; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Up to 100 million people travel annually from industrialized countries to resource-limited ones. Each traveller contains an internal ecosystem composed of tens of trillions of microbes, known as the intestinal microbiota, which has a large effect on health. READ MORE

    Abstract : The clinical course of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is highly heterogeneous, which has prompted the search for biomarkers that can predict prognosis in this disease. The IGHV gene mutation status and certain genomic aberrations have been identified as reliable prognostic markers of clinical outcome for this disorder. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects of infection and leukemia in Rwanda

    Author : Belson Rugwizangoga; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; interferon-λ; respiratory infection; nucleotide polymorphism; acute leukemia; Rwanda; Epstein-Barr virus; malaria;

    Abstract : A first part of this thesis addressed the potential impact of variants of genes encoding interferon-λ4, which is a cytokine that participates in protection against pathogens at epithelial surfaces, for the resolution of upper respiratory tract infections in Rwandan children. In a study of 480 subjects (≤5 years old), where follow-up samples were available from 161 subjects, it was observed that IFNL4 genotypes were associated with clearance of RNA viruses from upper airways. 4. 4. On the Origins of mobile Antibiotic Resistance Genes : A comparative genomics approach

    Author : Stefan Ebmeyer; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antibiotic resistance; comparative genomics; bacterial genomics; antibiotic resistance genes;

    Abstract : Mobile antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), transferable between bacterial cells, are major contributors to the antibiotic resistance crisis we are facing today. From which organisms pathogens acquired these genes is mostly unknown, yet knowledge about their origin is needed in order to limit the emergence and spread of novel ARGs in the future. READ MORE

    Abstract : The diplomonads are a diverse group of eukaryotic microbes found in oxygen limited environments such as the intestine of animals were they may cause severe disease. Among them, the prominent human parasite Giardia intestinalis non-invasively colonizes the small intestine of humans and animals where it induces the gastrointestinal disease giardiasis. READ MORE
