  1. 1. Terrain Modelling with GIS for Tectonic Geomorphology : Numerical Methods and Applications

    Author : Gyözö Jordan; Ulf Qvarfort; Tsehaie Woldai; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; digital elevation model; digital terrain modelling; GIS; morphometry; tectonic geomorphology; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Abstract : Analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs) by means of geomorphometry provides means of recognising fractures and characterising the morphotectonics of an area in a quantitative way. The objective of the thesis is to develop numerical methods and a consistent GIS methodology for tectonic geomorphology and apply it to test sites. READ MORE

  2. 2. Remote Sensing and GIS : Applications for Groundwater Potential Assessment in Eritrea

    Author : Semere Solomon; KTH; []
    Keywords : Remote sensing; Geographic Information Systems; groundwater; geomorphology; Digital elevation model; lithology; hard rock; lineament; structures; hydrogeology; Eritrea;

    Abstract : An integrated approach with remote sensing, GeographicInformation Systems (GIS) and more traditional fieldworktechniques was adopted to assess the groundwater potential inthe central highlands of Eritrea. Digitally enhanced colorcomposites and panchromatic images of Landsat TM and Spot wereinterpreted to produce thematic maps such as lithology andlineaments. READ MORE

  3. 3. Dead-Ice Under Different Climate Conditions: Processes, Landforms, Sediments and Melt Rates in Iceland and Svalbard

    Author : Anders Schomacker; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; klimatologi; glacier; dead-ice; surge; ice-cored; Little Ice Age; fysisk geografi; Geologi; Geology; Svalbard; Iceland; Sedimentology; cartography; pedology; geomorphology; Sedimentologi; Physical geography; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; climatology;

    Abstract : Modern dead-ice environments in the glacier forefields of Brúarjökull, Iceland and Holmströmbreen, Svalbard were investigated with focus on landform and sediment genesis, as well as quantification of melting. Field monitoring and studies of multi-temporal aerial photographs, satellite imagery, and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) provided data for the melting quantification. READ MORE

  4. 4. Setting the Holocene clock using varved lake sediments in Sweden

    Author : Lovisa Zillén; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; climate change; Physical geography; tephrochronology; palaeomagnetic secular variations; radiocarbon time-scale; Holocene varved lake sediments; varve chronology; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study annually laminated (varved) Holocene lake sediment in Sweden, their formation and their potential as chronological and palaeoecological archives. Five lakes with continuous Holocene varved lake sediment sequences in northern (Västerbotten) and west central Sweden (Värmland) were investigated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Geographic Distribution of Intra-specific Variation in Widespread Eurasian boreo-nemoral Woodland Herbs

    Author : Torbjörn Tyler; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; kemotaxonomi. Växters fysiologi inte kärlväxter .; Plant genetics; Växtgenetik; morfologi; chemotaxonomy. Physiology of nonvascular plants; Systematisk botanik; taxonomi; phytogeography; morphology; taxonomy; historical biogeography; Systematic botany; allozymes; population differentiation; postglacial migration; genetic variation; geographic variation;

    Abstract : Many woodland plant species have huge distribution areas covering large parts of the Eurasian continent including areas that were glaciated during the last glacial period. In the present thesis, the geographic distribution of variation within such species is investigated and discussed in relation to glacial survival and post-glacial migration, dispersal ability, breeding system and levels of gene-flow between populations and related species, and various methods to measure and analyse genetic variation.
