1. Local structure and composition : in additively manufactured bulk metallic glasses and composites
Abstract : Additive manufacturing enables the production of complex multi-material geometries and bulk metallic glass parts beyond their critical casting thickness. The local modification of structure, composition, and properties is explored in this thesis with the aim to design novel composite materials and functional gradients. READ MORE

2. Viscoelastic properties and plasticization potential of native, residual, and technical lignin
Abstract : Lignin in biomass, pulp, and isolated during pulping all have great potential as renewable and inexpensive thermoplastic components and materials, but widespread utilization is hindered by high glass transition temperatures (Tg), brittleness, and poor flow properties. The aim of this thesis is to elucidate what molecular structures govern lignin thermoplasticity and how these can be efficiently manipulated. READ MORE

3. 3D Magnetic Photonic Crystals : Synthesis and Characterization
Abstract : This thesis presents the synthesis methods and the characterizations of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, silica spheres with Fe3O4 nanoparticles embedded, and three dimensional magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) prepared from the spheres. The structure, material composition, magnetic and optical properties, photonic band gaps (PBGs), as well as how these properties depend on the concentration of the magnetic nanoparticles, are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), Faraday rotation (FR) and optical spectrophotometers. 4. Material Properties of Starch and Cereal Protein Films and Foams
Abstract : Materials that are renewable and biodegradable are demanded for environmental reasons. Biopolymeric materials, such as materials from starch and cereal proteins, are both renewable and biodegradable. However, starch and cereal protein materials are generally rather brittle and therefore need to be plasticized to become more flexible. READ MORE

5. Redox reactions and structure - properties relations in mixed alkali/alkaline earth glasses : The role of antimony oxides during the fining process- A structural study of copper(I) and copper(II)
Abstract : It is important to optimize glass compositions for their specific purpose but also for the efficiency of the production process, the manufacturing of glass. This will be beneficial economically and environmentally. READ MORE
