  1. 1. Glucose and lipid metabolism in insulin resistance : an experimental study in fat cells

    Author : Jonas Burén; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; adipocyte; insulin resistance; type 2 diabetes; insulin signalling; glucose uptake; insulin; glucose; dexamethasone; insulin receptor substrate; protein kinase B; GLUT4; lipoprotein lipase; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes is usually caused by a combination of pancreatic β-cell failure and insulin resistance in target tissues like liver, muscle and fat. Insulin resistance is characterised by an impaired effect of insulin to reduce hepatic glucose production and to promote glucose uptake in peripheral tissues. READ MORE

  2. 2. Pharmacometrics Modelling in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus : Implications on Study Design and Diabetes Disease Progression

    Author : Siti Maisharah Sheikh Ghadzi; Maria C. Kjellsson; Mats O. Karlsson; Sandra Visser; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacometric; type 2 diabetes mellitus; impaired glucose tolerance; prediabetes; anti-diabetes drug development; insulin; glucose; natural diabetes disease progression; lifestyle intervention; short-term provocation; long-term effect; glucose homeostasis; glucose and insulin regulation; weight; dropout; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology;

    Abstract : Pharmacometric modelling is widely used in many aspects related to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), for instance in the anti-diabetes drug development, and in quantifying the disease progression of T2DM.The aim of this thesis were to improve the design of early phase anti-diabetes drug development studies with the focus on the power to identify mechanism of drug action (MoA), and to characterize and quantify the progression from prediabetes to overt diabetes, both the natural progression and the progression with diet and exercise interventions, using pharmacometrics modelling. 3. 3. Towards Defence In Depth In Diabetes Glucose Self-Management

    Author : Fredrik Ståhl; Institutionen för reglerteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Diabetes; model; insulin action; postprandial glucose;

    Abstract : Diabetes is a disease characterized by insufficient capacity to regulate the blood glucose level. In insulin-dependent diabetes, multiple daily injections of insulin have to be administered. In-between scheduled visits to the care provider, the patient has to manage the glucose control independently. READ MORE

  4. 4. Oxidative stress and inflammation as a response to glucose exposure and dialysis

    Author : Anna Bryland; Njurmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glucose; glucose degradation products; dialysis; diabetes; oxidative stress; inflammation; endothelial dysfunction;

    Abstract : Abstract: The main player of this thesis is glucose, both on a cellular level and with a clinical approach. Too much or wrongly handled glucose contributes to increased inflammation and oxidative stress, which is reinforced by the negative influences of uraemia and dialysis treatment. READ MORE

  5. 5. Gene regulation of UDP-glucose synthesis and metabolism in plants

    Author : Henrik Johansson; Pierdomenica Perata; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; antisense; Arabidopsis thaliana; carbohydrate; hybrid aspen; photosynthesis; poplar; sugar; UDP-glucose; UDP-glucose pyrophosphorylase; UDP-glucose dehydrogenase; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Photosynthesis captures light from the sun and converts it into carbohydrates, which are utilised by almost all living organisms. The conversion between the different forms of carbohydrates is the basis to form almost all biological molecules. READ MORE
