1. The Human Y chromosome and its role in the developing male nervous system
Abstract : Recent research demonstrated that besides a role in sex determination and male fertility, the Y chromosome is involved in additional functions including prostate cancer, sex-specific effects on the brain and behaviour, graft-versus-host disease, nociception, aggression and autoimmune diseases. The results presented in this thesis include an analysis of sex-biased genes encoded on the X and Y chromosomes of rodents. READ MORE

2. Volumetric Analysis in Mechanical Behaviour and Physical Ageing of Polymers
Abstract : Volumetric changes associated with the deformation of ideal elastic solids depends on elastic constants of the solid and applied strain. Their magnitude is easily determined from the corresponding Poisson's ratios. READ MORE

3. Efficient Trading in the Short-term Electricity Markets for Integration of Renewable Energy Sources : Multistage Stochastic and Agent-based Modeling Approaches for Continuous Intraday Electricity Market
Abstract : This thesis investigates the role of different short-term electricity market design aspects that can facilitate better coordination of resources within the power system. The work also emphasizes on better cross-border integration of the short-term markets to improve the market liquidity, competition, social welfare, and flexibility in the system, which is essential for facilitating the integration of renewable sources. 4. Transcription factor effects on chromatin organisation and gene regulation
Abstract : The intranuclear DNA of all eukaryotic cells is packed into chromatin, generating a repressive environment for the genome. Remodelling of the local chromatin structure is a vital process that allows access to the obscured DNA sequence and may induce the expression of specific genes. READ MORE

5. Glucocorticoid receptor function : interactions, mutants and ligand responses
Abstract : The protein that is investigated in this thesis is the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), which belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily of ligand activated transcription factors. The nuclear receptors share three conserved structural domains, the N-terminal transactivating domain, the central DNA-binding domain and the C-terminal ligand-binding domain. READ MORE
