1. Integration of graphene into MEMS and NEMS for sensing applications
Abstract : This thesis presents a novel approach to integrate chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene into silicon micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) to fabricate different graphene based MEMS/NEMS structures and explore mechanical properties of graphene as well as their applications such as acceleration sensing, humidity sensing and CO2 sensing. The thesis also presents a novel method of characterization of CVD graphene grain boundary based defects. READ MORE

2. Development of Mild Methods for Selective Covalent Functionalization of Graphene
Abstract : This thesis discusses methods for the comparatively mild covalent functionalization of graphene. Several graphene models were investigated: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-graphene on SiO2/Si substrate, graphite foil, graphite flakes, kish graphite and highly oriented pyrolytic graphite. 3. Simple Models for Complex Nonequilibrium Problems in Nanoscale Friction and Network Dynamics
Abstract : This doctoral thesis investigates three different topics: How friction evolves in atomically thin layered materials (2D materials); How social dynamics can be used to model grand scale common-pool resource games; Benchmarking of various image reconstruction algorithms in atomic force microscopy experiments. While these topics are diverse, they share being complex out-of-equilibrium systems. READ MORE

4. Graphene field-effect transistors for high frequency applications
Abstract : Rapid development of wireless and internet communications requires development of new generation high frequency electronics based on new device concepts and new materials. The very high intrinsic velocity of charge carriers in graphene makes it promising new channel material for high frequency electronics. READ MORE

5. Characterisation and Modelling of Graphene FETs for Terahertz Mixers and Detectors
Abstract : Graphene is a two-dimensional sheet of carbon atoms with numerous envisaged applications owing to its exciting properties. In particular, ultrahigh-speed graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) are possible due to the unprecedented carrier velocities in ideal graphene. READ MORE
