  1. 1. Group B streptococci and other neonatal infections

    Author : Elisabet Persson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Neonatal infections; sepsis; incidence; ; Group B streptococcus; ; serotype; ; epidemiology; ; genotype; ; surface protein; ; antibiotic susceptibility;

    Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis were to estimate the incidence and etiology of invasive infections in neonates and to characterize invasive strains of group B streptococci from a defined geographic area. All infants aged 0-120 days with a bacterial or fungal isolate from blood or CSF in the defined area were identified. READ MORE

  2. 2. Neonatal invasive infections with focus on Group B streptococci

    Author : Margrét Johansson Gudjónsdóttir; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neonatal sepsis; Group B streptococci; Virulence factors;

    Abstract : Invasive infections affect neonates with the risk of severe morbidity and death, and Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus, GBS) remains one of the most common pathogens. The aim of this thesis was to assess infections among neonates and infants, focusing on GBS to better understand prevention and treatment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Group A Streptococci; Epidemiology and Genetics of Antibiotic Resistance

    Author : Aftab Jasir; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; typing; epidemiology; M protein; emm gene; erythromycin; tetracycline; macrolides; streptococci; antibiotics; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; mycology; virology; bacteriology;

    Abstract : Group A streptococci (GAS) cause throat and skin infections, severe invasive diseases as well as the non-suppurative complications acute rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis. GAS have retained susceptibility to betalactam drugs, but resistance to alternative antibiotics is of concern. READ MORE

  4. 4. Group B streptococcal infections in neonates : Clinical and pathogenic aspects

    Author : Jan Källman; Leif Gothefors; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Clinical and pathogenic aspects of Group B streptococci (GBS), as a major pathogen responsible of invasive disease in newborn infants, were investigated.Cases of neonatal septicaemia during 1981-1994 were studied at Orebro Medical Centre Hospital. 132 children ful1filled laboratory and clinical criteria for neonatal septicaemia. 5. 5. Surface proteins of pathogenic streptococci

    Author : Thomas Areschoug; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; Microbiology; factor H; complement regulator; CD89; human IgA; protective immunity; surface protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; group B streptococcus;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) and the group B streptococcus (GBS) are two important human pathogens that cause different types of diseases and express different surface structures implicated in virulence. This thesis focuses on several surface proteins expressed by these pathogens, analyzing the biological function of these proteins and their ability to elicit protective immunity. READ MORE
