1. Controlling Electronic and Geometrical Structure of Honeycomb-Lattice Materials Supported on Metal Substrates : Graphene and Hexagonal Boron Nitride
Abstract : The present thesis is focused on various methods of controlling electronic and geometrical structure of two-dimensional overlayers adsorbed on metal surfaces exemplified by graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) grown on transition metal (TM) substrates. Combining synchrotron-radiation-based spectroscopic and various microscopic techniques with in situ sample preparation, we are able to trace the evolution of overlayer electronic and geometrical properties in overlayer/substrate systems, as well as changes of interfacial interaction in the latter. 2. Spin Transport in Two-Dimensional Material Heterostructures
Abstract : Spintronics is considered as an alternative for information processing beyond the charge based technology. The spintronic device performance depend on the spin relaxation mechanisms in the channel material. Si and graphene are interesting for their long spin coherence lengths and ideal for spin transport channels. READ MORE

3. Characterization and Functionalization of 2D Overlayers Adsorbed on Transition Metals
Abstract : Two-dimensional layered materials, namely monolayer hexagonal boron nitride and graphene were grown by CVD on various transition metals. The physical and chemical properties of these systems were characterized systematically using synchrotron-based spectroscopic techniques, scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. 4. Heterogeneous Integration Technologies Based on Wafer Bonding and Wire Bonding for Micro and Nanosystems
Abstract : Heterogeneous integration realizes assembly and packaging of separately manufactured micro-components and novel functional nanomaterials onto the same substrate. It has been a key technology for advancing the discrete micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) devices and micro-electronic components towards cost-effective and space-efficient multi-functional units. 5. Theoretical modelling of thin film growth in the B-N system
Abstract : In vapour phase deposition, the knowledge and control of homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions in connection to precursor design may lead to the deposition of the desired material; structure or phase. This thesis is a document attempting to increase the knowledge of film growth in the B-N system. READ MORE
