  1. 1. A Helping Hand : On Innovations for Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology

    Author : Mats Nilsson; Hans von Holst; Metin Akay; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hand function; Mechatronic system; Orthose; Neurological rehabilitation; Brain-Computer Interface; Functional Electric Stimulation;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on assistive and rehabilitation technology for restoring the function of the hand. It presents three different approaches to assistive technology: one in the form of an orthosis, one in the form of a brain-computer interface combined with functional electrical stimulation and finally one totally aiming at rehabilitating the nervous system by restoring brain function using the concept of neuroplasticity. 2. 2. Standing in children with bilateral spastic cerebral palsy : aspects of muscle strength, vision and motor function

    Author : Cecilia Lidbeck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The movement and posture disorder of cerebral palsy (CP) is presumed to mainly be a consequence of the motor disorder, but accompanying disturbances with sensations and perception have also been suggested to influence motor function. The aim was to investigate factors influencing standing posture in children with bilateral spastic CP (BSCP) with varying standing abilities. READ MORE

  3. 3. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis : disease consequences and treatment effects on muscle strength, gait and pain

    Author : Eva Broström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Gait; muscle strength; kinematics; kinetics; pain;

    Abstract : Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) may have a profound effect on the life of a child. Rheumatic diseases in children manifest mainly as synovitis, pain, stiffness, deformity, growth disturbances and fatigue. It is not uncommon to have reduced activity, lower aerobic endurance, and decreased muscle strength. READ MORE

  4. 4. Long-term effects of growth hormone replacement in hypopituitary adults on body composition, bone mass and cardiovascular risk factors

    Author : Mariam Elbornsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; growth hormone; growth hormone deficiency; growth hormone replacement; bone mineral density; body composition; muscle strength; elderly; cardiovascular risk factors; pituitary irradiation;

    Abstract : Growth hormone (GH) deficient (GHD) adults have decreased bone mass and muscle strength, impaired body composition, disturbed serum lipid pattern and increased morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. GH replacement normalizes most of these aberrations within the first year of treatment. READ MORE

  5. 5. Neuromuscular aspects of eccentric knee extensor actions : effects of electrical stimulation, age, gender and training

    Author : Jan Seger; Alf Thorstensson; Roger Enoka; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Fysiologi; children; concentric; eccentric; efficiency; electrical stimulation; electromyography; growth; inhibition; isokinetic; specificity; strength; training;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to study the effects of electrical stimulation, age, gender and training on the torque- and EMG-velocity relationships during eccentric knee extensor muscle actions in man. An isokinetic custom-built dynamometer was evaluated and used throughout the thesis. READ MORE
