  1. 1. Atlantic Water in the Nordic Seas : A satellite altimetry perspective on ocean circulation

    Author : Sara Broomé; Johan Nilsson; Jonas Nycander; Léon Chafik; Michael A. Spall; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic Ocean climate; ocean heat transport; sea surface height; topographic control; Lagrangian trajectories; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : The Atlantic Water in the Nordic Seas contributes to the mild climate of Northern Europe and is the main oceanic source of heat for the Arctic. The northward bound transport of the warm and saline Atlantic Water is mediated by a topographically constrained cyclonic boundary current along the Norwegian continental slope. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Underground as a Storage Facility. Modelling of Nuclear Waste Repositories and Aquifer Thermal Energy Stores

    Author : Thomas Probert; Matematisk fysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; exponential decay; modelling; fractured rock; classical mechanics; quantum mechanics; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; relativity; statistical physics; thermodynamics; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; klassisk mekanik; relativitet; kvantmekanik; gravitation; statistisk fysik; termodynamik; Environmental technology; pollution control; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; conformal flow; heat as a tracer; KBS-3; stress field; temperature field; analytical solution; salt buoyancy; groundwater flow; nuclear waste repository; aquifer thermal energy storage; Fysicumarkivet A:1998:Probert;

    Abstract : The underground is a vast region, which is, too a large extent, unused by man. It has a large potential as a storage facility due to its vastness and availability. This thesis, which consists of eleven papers and reports, deals with nuclear waste repositories in solid rock and with aquifer thermal energy storage systems. READ MORE

  3. 3. A Study on the Correlation between Ladle Glaze and Non-Metallic Inclusions in the Ladle Treatment

    Author : Minho Song; Du Sichen; Jerome P. Downey; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; non-metallic inclusions; ladle treatment; ladle glaze; tracer; tool steel; viscosity; activity; modelling; Al2O3-CaO-MgO-SiO2 system; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, the correlation between ladle glaze and non-metallic inclusions in the ladle treatment was studied. A number of industrial trials with full scale ladle and laboratory works were performed to investigate the inclusions in the ladle treatment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Unraveling the thermohaline structure of the Southern Ocean using functional data analysis

    Author : Etienne Pauthenet; Fabien Roquet; Jonas Nycander; Alberto Naveira Garabato; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Southern Ocean; Front; Water mass; Antarctic Polar Front; Descriptive Physical Oceanography; Functional Principal Component Analysis; Elephant Seal; Biologging; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : The Southern Ocean connects the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and provides a direct pathway to exchange mass, heat and salt across the Global Ocean, therefore playing an important role in the global climate system. Due to the complexity of its structure and the general inadequacy of its sampling, both in time and space, it remains a challenge to describe and visualize the three dimensional pattern of its circulation and the associated tracer distribution (temperature, salinity, oxygen or nutrients). 5. 5. An investigation into ocean thermodynamics and water-mass transformation

    Author : Magnus Hieronymus; Nycander Jonas; Stephen Griffies; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean thermodynamics; water-mass transformation; buoyancy; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : This thesis presents oceanic budgets of potential temperature, salinity and buoyancy as well as a novel way of diagnosing water-mass transformation in salinity-temperature space. The buoyancy of seawater is given by a nonlinear function of temperature, salinity and pressure and much of the work in this thesis revolves around how fluxes of heat and salinity influence the buoyancy of seawater through these nonlinearities.
