  1. 1. Holocene vegetation dynamics and climate changes in the Torneträsk area, northern Sweden

    Author : Lena Barnekow; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; Palaeobotany; northern Sweden; Torneträsk; Abisko; lake-level; radiocarbon dating; forest history; Holocene; tree-line; climate; Vegetation; fylogeni; palynologi; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetation history and the climate changes in a subarctic area. The results are based on pollen and macrofossil records from six lakes in the Torneträsk area. The lakes are situated at altitudes between 370 and 999 m a.s. READ MORE

  2. 2. Long-lasting ecological legacies of reindeer on tundra vegetation

    Author : Dagmar D. Egelkraut; Johan Olofsson; Bruce Forbes; Hans Tømmervik; René van der Wal; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alternative stable state; Herbivory; Historical contingency; Nutrient cycling; Plant-herbivore interactions; Plant-soil feedbacks; Rangifer tarandus; Reindeer herding; Traditional land use; Tundra vegetation;

    Abstract : Reindeer can have strong effects on the plant species composition and functioning of tundra ecosystems, and often promote a transition towards a graminoid-dominated vegetation type. As a result, they influence many ecological processes, such as nutrient dynamics, soil biotic composition and functioning, and carbon storage. READ MORE

  3. 3. Holocene Environmental Change of Southern Öland, Sweden

    Author : Kerstin Alm Kübler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Pollen analysis; Öland; Sweden; heath vegetation; landscape history; Fagus; beach ridges; numerical analysis; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Quarternary Geology; kvartärgeologi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes Holocene environmental change in Ottenby, southern Öland,Sweden. Analyses of pollen sequences collected distally in the Littorina ridge and in fentroughs between lower laying beach ridges show the vegetation history during twoperiods, the first around 8000 BP and the second from 0/500 AD to about present time. 4. 4. Impact of climate warming on Arctic plant diversity: phylogenetic diversity unravels opposing shrub responses in a warming tundra

    Author : Ruud Scharn; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic; Oroarctic; Tundra; long-term warming; soil moisture; vegetation change; shrubification; biodiversity; phylogenetic diversity; plant community structure;

    Abstract : The Arctic biome is at significant risk, with recent observations suggesting that climate change is warming the Arctic nearly four times faster than the global average. Last decade, evidence from experimental warming studies and observations of ambient warming over time shows how increasing air temperature in the Arctic has led to changes to arctic vegetation, and encroachment of trees and shrubs into the tundra. 5. 5. A green future with thawing permafrost mires? : a study of climate-vegetation interactions in European subarctic peatlands

    Author : Julia Bosiö; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fennoscandia; carbon; greenhouse gas; photosynthesis; PAR; snow; climate change; permafrost; peatland; subarctic;

    Abstract : Climate projections indicate that Arctic and sub-Arctic regions are facing a significant change in climate during the 21st century. With warmer temperatures precipitation is also expected to increase, and in particular winter precipitation. READ MORE
