  1. 1. Distribution and activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in marine and estuarine waters

    Author : Hanna Farnelid; Lasse Riemann; Jonathan Zehr; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 454-pyrosequencing; diazotrophs; heterotrophic bacteria; marine bacteria; marine microbial ecology; microbiology; nifH; nitrogenase; nitrogen fixation; PCR; qPCR; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : In aquatic environments the availability of nitrogen (N) generally limits primary production. N2-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) can convert N2 gas into ammonium and provide significant input of N into the oceans. Cyanobacteria are thought to be the main N2-fixers but diazotrophs also include a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria. READ MORE

  2. 2. Functional Profiling Of Metabolic Regulation In Marine Bacteria

    Author : Saraladevi Muthusamy; Jarone Pinhassi; Torsten Thomas; Sarala Devi Muthusamy; Institutionen för biologi och miljö (BOM) Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine microbiology; physiology; heterotrophic bacteria; adaptive strategies; survival; proteomics; growth phase; proteorhodopsin; inorganic sulphur oxidation; anaplerotic CO2 fixation; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : Oceans are powered by active, metabolically diverse microorganisms, which are important in regulating biogeochemical cycles on Earth. Most of the ocean surface is often limited by nutrients, influencing bacterial growth and activities. READ MORE

  3. 3. Links Between Structure and Function of Heterotrophic Aquatic Bacterial Communities

    Author : Silke Langenheder; Lars Tranvik; Eva Lindström; David Kirchman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; heterotrophic bacteria; dissolved organic matter; diversity; community composition; ecosystem functioning; salinity; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Heterotrophic bacteria utilize dissolved organic matter, and the carbon flow through an ecosystem depends on the fractions of the utilized carbon that is either respired or transferred to higher trophic levels. The major aim this thesis is to investigate 1) the relationship between composition and functioning in heterotrophic bacterioplankton communities and 2) the influence of environmental conditions on both parameters. 4. 4. Bacteria that escape predation : waterborne pathogens and their relatives

    Author : Karolina I. A. Eriksson; Agneta Andersson; Johanna Thelaus; Jon Ahlinder; David Sundell; Klaus Jürgens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bacterial pathogens; protozoa; predation resistance; aquatic microbiology; climate change; opportunists; humification; iron; environmental science; miljövetenskap; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The hidden presence of opportunistic bacterial pathogens in the environment evokes concerns about emerging diseases, especially in the light of climate change. The co-evolution of bacteria and their predators (protozoa) has led to bacterial defence strategies of which some contribute to the ability of bacteria to cause disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Photochemical alterations of dissolved organic matter : Impact on heterotrophic bacteria and carbon cycling in lakes

    Author : Stefan Bertilsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : Globally, the amount of carbon in dissolved organic matter (DOM) is similar to the total amount in the atmosphere. DOM also plays a key role in structuring natural surface waters and affects the physical, chemical, and biological character of these systems. READ MORE
