1. Effects of the environment on quantum systems: decoherence, bound states and high impedance in superconducting circuits
Abstract : Superconducting circuits in the quantum regime represent a viable platform for microwave quantum optics, quantum simulations and quantum computing. In the last two decades, a large effort brought this architecture from an academic curiosity to concrete technology. READ MORE

2. Management of technology in the process industries: Matching market and machine
Abstract : The process industries span multiple industrial sectors and constitute a substantial part of the entire manufacturing industry. Since companies belonging to this family of industries are often very asset intensive, their ability to respond to changes is often limited in the short term. READ MORE

3. Quantum effects in nanoscale Josephson junction circuits
Abstract : This thesis presents the results of an experimental study on single-charge effects in nanoscale Josephson junctions and Cooper pair transistors (CPTs). In nanoscale Josephson junctions the charging energy EC becomes significant at sub-Kelvin temperatures and single-charge effects, such as the Coulomb blockade of Cooper pair tunneling, influence the transport properties. 4. Superconducting quantum circuits in a tunable electromagnetic environment
Abstract : This thesis presents the results of an experimental study onsmall-capacitance Josephson junctions in a high impedanceenvironment. In small-capacitance Josephson junctions the charging energyEC=e2/2C becomes relevant at low temperature and thecharging effects influence the transport properties. READ MORE

5. The Radio Frequency Single-Electron Transistor and the Horizon Picture for Tunneling
Abstract : The main part of this thesis concerns the development of a new type of single electron transistor (SET) called the radio frequency single electron transistor (RF-SET). The RF-SET is the most sensitive electrometer demonstrated. READ MORE
