  1. 1. Studies on HIV-1 core assembly

    Author : Samir Abdurahman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV-1; mutation; capsid; p24; capsid assembly; alpha-HGA; antiviral;

    Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to define the roles of Gag (p55), in particular, the capsid (CA, p24) protein in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) particle assembly. More specifically, i) to determine the relative contribution of some specific residues and/or sequences in HIV-1 CA core assembly and virus release, ii) to characterize the importance of two conserved residues with quite opposing intra-molecular contacts with other CA residues in capsid assembly, iii) to define the role and significance of a specific amino acid involved in formation of a conserved β-hairpin structure in HIV-1 capsid assembly, and iv) to define the active antiviral metabolite of an antiviral tripeptide amide previously found to affect HIV-1 capsid assembly and infectivity. 2. 2. Short modified peptides and their metabolites inhibit HIV replication

    Author : Elin Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : HIV-1; AIDS; GPG-NH2; G-NH2; antiretroviral drugs; Dipeptidyl peptidase IV; CD26; prodrug;

    Abstract : Several drugs inhibiting the replication of HIV-1, the causative agent of AIDS, are available today. However, HIV-1 treatment is hampered by side effects, poor adherence and development of resistance. READ MORE

  3. 3. Physics of Viral Infectivity: Energetics of Genome Ejection

    Author : Meerim Jeembaeva; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microfluidics.; differential scanning calorimetry; capsid; Key words: phage; osmotic suppression; DNA ejection; isothermal titration calorimetry; enthalpy;

    Abstract : All viruses that infect bacteria, plant, or animal cells involve a genome (RNA or DNA) that is encapsidated by a rigid protein shell. After delivery of the viral genome into the host cell, new capsid proteins, which are encoded by viral DNA or RNA, are expressed and self-assembled into new viral capsids. READ MORE

  4. 4. Altering HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein maturation and its effects on viral infectivity

    Author : Alenka Jejcic; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV-1;

    Abstract : HIV-1 is dependent on its envelope glycoprotein (Env) to initiate infection. Env binds to cellular receptors and mediate the following fusion of the viral envelope with the cell plasma membrane. READ MORE

  5. 5. The effect of alpha-HGA on HIV-1 replication

    Author : Masoud Youssefi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV-1; p24; capsid formation; alpha-HGA; antiretroviral; uptake;

    Abstract : Different classes of anti HIV-1 drugs are now available for treatment of HIV-1 infection. Although improved, these drugs show adverse effects and their long-term efficiency is severely hampered by the emergence of resistant viruses. Therefore, less toxic and more effective anti HIV-1 therapeutics agents are still needed. READ MORE
