  1. 1. Biocomposites Based on Core-Shell Cellulose Nanofibers : Preparation, Structure, and Properties

    Author : Kasinee Prakobna; Lars Berglund; David Plackett; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biocomposites; cellulose nanofibers; polysaccharides; holocellulose; nanostructure; dispersion; mechanical properties; hygromechanical properties; moisture stability; film; porous material; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are of interest as load-bearing components for polymer matrix nanocomposites. A wide range of nanostructured materials including nanopaper/films, foams, aerogels, and hydrogels can be prepared from CNFs. The material performance can be fine-tuned when CNFs are combined with different polymer matrices. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ultrastructural Aspects of Pulp Fibers as Studied by Dynamic FT-IR Spectroscopy

    Author : Margaretha Åkerholm; KTH; []
    Keywords : cellulose; cooperation; crystallinity; dynamic test; glucomannan; hardwood; holocellulose; humidity; infrared spectroscopy; kraft pulp; lignin; mechanical pulp; orientation; polarised light; softwood; strain; sulphite pulp; viscoelasticity; xylan;

    Abstract : Dynamic (or 2D) FT-IR spectroscopy in combination withpolarized IR irradiation has been used in this work to studywood polymer orientation and interactions on theultrastructural level in wood fibers in the native state aswell as the effects of different pulping processes. The woodpolymer interactions were studied under both dry and humidconditions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Eco-friendly Holocellulose Materials for Mechanical Performance and Optical Transmittance

    Author : Xuan Yang; Lars Berglund; Eero Kontturi; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : Cellulosic materials can be sustainable replacements for fossil-based plastics; yet for some applications improvements are needed for mechanical properties, optical transmittance and eco-friendly characteristics. In this thesis, holocellulose materials are investigated for this purpose, and processing-structure-property relationships are discussed. READ MORE

  5. 5. The cell wall ultrastructure of wood fibres : effects of the chemical pulp fibre line

    Author : Jesper Fahlén; Ulf W. Gedde; Drek G. Gray; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Chemical engineering; atomic force microscopy; cellulose; cell wall; drying; fiber; Kemiteknik; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Knowledge of the ultrastructural arrangement within wood fibres is important for understanding the mechanical properties of the fibres themselves, as well as for understanding and controlling the ultrastructural changes that occur during pulp processing. The object of this work was to explore the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) in studies of the cell wall ultrastructure and to see how this structure is affected in the kraft pulp fibre line.
