  1. 1. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen in host defence against Francisella tularensis

    Author : Helena Lindgren; Anders Sjöstedt; Tommy Sundquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; Francisella tularensis; inducible nitric oxide synthase; phagocyte oxidase; macrophages; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology;

    Abstract : Francisella tularensis, the causative agent of tularemia, is a potent human and animal pathogen. Initially upon infection of the host, intramacrophage proliferation of F. tularensis occurs but after activation of the acquired host immunity, the phagocytes become activated to kill the bacterium. In my thesis, I focused on mechanisms utilized by F. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bilateral neurogenic mechanisms following acute unilateral inflammation

    Author : Indre Bileviciute-Ljungar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bilateral changes; host defence reaction; contralateral treatment; dorsal root reflexes; cross-spinal reflexes; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; neuropeptide Y; nociception; inflammation; carrageenan; edema; hindpaw withdrawal latency; microdialysis; hot-plate test; Randall Selitto test;

    Abstract : The contribution of neurogenic mechanisms to inflammation has been extensively studied during the last decade, but provides no clear understanding of the bilateral changes commonly seen following unilateral stimulation. This work demonstrates that bilateral neurogenic mechanisms are a part of general host defence reactions following acute unilateral challenge, for the first time revealing that local anaesthetics applied contralaterally, might be used for therapeutic purposes in relieving pain and inflammation. 3. 3. White Spot Syndrome Virus Interaction with a Freshwater Crayfish

    Author : Pikul Jiravanichpaisal; Kenneth Söderhäll; Irene Söderhäll; Ellen Kauschke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; WSSV; crayfish; hematopoietic tissue; cytokine; innate immunity; hemocytes; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Viruses are very abundant in water and hence diseases caused by viruses are common in marine organisms. These diseases create great problems for the commercial farming of crustaceans and mussels. READ MORE

  4. 4. Innate Immune Proteins in a Crustacean Pacifastacus leniusculus

    Author : Chenglin Wu; Irene Söderhäll; petr Kopácek; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 2-DE; hematopoiesis; marker protein; melaniztion inhibiting protein; proPO-system; pattern recognition protein; PGN; ficolin-like protein; Immunology; Immunologi; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : Hemocytes (blood cells) are important in the immune defense against pathogens in invertebrates. In crusteacean, the hemocytes and plasma components mount a strong innate immune response against different pathogens including bacteria and virus. READ MORE

  5. 5. The cytolethal distending toxin of Haemophilus ducreyi. Prevalence and effects on normal cells

    Author : Liselott Svensson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Haemophilus ducreyi is a fastidious Gram-negative bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted disease chancroid. The disease is endemic in many developing countries and occurs as restricted outbreaks in the industrialised part of the world. READ MORE
