  1. 1. The plasticity and geography of host use and the diversification of butterflies

    Author : Jessica Slove Davidson; Niklas Janz; Tommi Nyman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nymphalidae; host range; phylogeny; distribution; latitude; phylogeography; local specialisation; colonisation; host shift; polyphagy; speciation; diversification; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Our world is changing rapidly and factors like urbanisation, changed agricultural practices and climate change are causing losses in butterfly diversity. It is therefore of importance to understand the source of their diversity. READ MORE

  2. 2. Evolution and host-specific adaptations of Legionella pneumophila

    Author : Anaísa B. Moreno; Lionel Guy; Dan I. Andersson; Fredrik Söderbom; Alexander W. Ensminger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; Legionella pneumophila; host-adaptation; experimental evolution; Acanthamoeba castellanii; transfection; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : How bacteria evolve pathogenic traits is shaped by their communities and environments. Legionella pneumophila is ubiquitous in aquatic habitats, where it persists by replicating within a broad range of protozoan hosts. Using the same mechanisms, L. READ MORE

  3. 3. Functional dualism of antimicrobial host defence peptides

    Author : Åse Björstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : antimicrobial; apoptosis; cathelicidin; host defence peptide; interleukin 8; LL-37; permeabilisation;

    Abstract : Antimicrobial host defence peptides are central to innate immunity and many possess direct antimicrobial actions on bacteria as well as indirect immunomodulatory functions on human leukocytes. Different variants of the bifunctional Helicobacter pylori peptide, Hp(2-20), were synthesised and inhibition zone assays and chemiluminescence systems were employed for determination of direct antimicrobial action and superoxide release (immunomodulatory) from human neutrophils, respectively. 4. 4. Phenotypic and genetic adaptations to a new host plant : Ecological divergence of a specialist insect

    Author : Kalle Nilsson; anpassning och samevolution Artbildning; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ecological speciation; persistence of ecological adaptations; host plant shift; genomic landscape; genomic inversion; parallelism; evolvability; reproductive barriers; Tephritis;

    Abstract : Divergent ecological adaptation resulting from selection is common, but how often it results in differentiation that can last in the face of gene flow is debated. Reproductive barriers persistent to stochastic environmental change are key for species to form. READ MORE

  5. 5. It Takes Two to Tango : Bacterial heterogeneity and host cell features govern Salmonella infection

    Author : Viktor Ek; Mikael E. Sellin; Francisco García del Portillo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Salmonella; swimming; swim pattern; targetting; virulence; invasion; host-pathogen interactions; epithelium; epithelial cells; macrophages; monocytes; monolayer; flagella; genome; genetic; barcoding; discreet-invasion; shape; morphology; antibiotics; persistence; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S.Tm) causes enterocolitis with significant worldwide morbidity and mortality. The general aim of this thesis is to investigate variation in host cell invasion mechanisms used by S.Tm across different host cell contexts, as well as the influence of bacterial cell-cell heterogeneity on invasion-relevant S.
