  1. 1. The activation and regulation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in SLE : and possible therapeutic interventions

    Author : Karin Hjorton; Lars Rönnblom; Maija-Leena Eloranta; Hans Carlsten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SLE; pDCs; NK cells; interferon; autoantibodies; immune complex; hydroxychloroquine; IRAK4 inhibition;

    Abstract : Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease, characterized by the presence of anti-nuclear antibodies and the formation of nucleic acid containing immune complexes (ICs), which can cause organ damage by deposition in tissues. ICs strongly trigger the plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) to produce interferon (IFN)-α, which potently activates the immune system. READ MORE

  2. 2. Health economics and its measures in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Johan Karlsson; Reumatologi och molekylär skelettbiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cost-utility analysis; Cost-of-illness; Quality of life; EuroQol 5-Dimensions; Antirheumatic agents; TNF inhibition; Outcome assessment; Disease activity; Disability; Health economics; Rheumatoid arthritis;

    Abstract : Objectives: To study: (I) the impact on cost-utility analyses of applying different national EuroQol 5-Dimensions (EQ-5D) preference sets; (II and III) whether, in methotrexate-refractory, early rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the addition of infliximab results in superior health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and may be considered cost-effective, as compared to adding sulfasalazine and hydroxychloroquine; (IV) how costs relate to disability (measured by the health-assessment questionnaire, HAQ), disease activity (28-joint disease activity score, DAS28) and HRQoL (EQ-5D) in RA. Methods: In the observational SSATG register, one-year quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) accumulation of two interventions was compared according to the UK, US, or Danish EQ-5D preference sets. 3. 3. Retinal pigment epithelial cells, oxidative stress and lipofuscin : relation to age-related macular degeneration

    Author : Staffan Sundelin; Stefan Seregard; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : In developed countries, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of loss of central vision in people over the age of 65. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) appears to be the site of early pathological changes in AMD. READ MORE

  4. 4. Antinuclear and antiphospholipid antibodies versus disease manifestations and clinical outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus

    Author : Martina Frodlund; Christopher Sjöwall; Jonas Wetterö; Thomas Skogh; Lene Dreyer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has an exceptionally heterogeneous clinical spectrum, ranging from mild disease limited to skin and joints to severe manifestations with renal disorder, central nervous system disease, severe cytopenias and thromboembolic events. Important clinical challenges include the prediction of disease flares and the identification of individuals that are likely to evolve severe disease with accrual of organ damage and worse prognosis. 5. 5. The role of autophagy in anticancer therapy

    Author : Matheus Dyczynski; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Autophagy is a fundamental catabolic process, which is utilized by nearly every cell and tissue type upon stress exposure and has been shown to contribute to resistance to chemotherapy in a variety of cancers. The subject of this thesis is to shed light on the role of autophagy in chemotherapy and to investigate novel regulators of autophagy. READ MORE
