    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; critical paediatric bioethics; growth hormone treatment; medicalisation; phenomenology of the body; critical disability studies; short stature; drug regulations;

    Abstract : Several studies have argued that there is a correlation between short stature and negative experiences and characteristics, such as social discrimination, economic disadvantage, health problems (especially for men). The idea that short men have a disadvantage in social interactions and in partner choices is also widespread in popular culture and common knowledge. READ MORE

  2. 2. Identification of novel growth hormone-regulated factors

    Author : Björn Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Growth hormone; idiopathic short stature; growth hormone deficient; prepubertal; children; genomic; proteomic;

    Abstract : The studies described in this thesis aimed to identify novel factors involved in the regulation of longitudinal growth and bone mineralization in response to growth hormone (GH) treatment. This was done by performing a single factor study (Paper I) where it was found that growth response was negatively correlated with adiponectin levels during the first year of GH treatment in short prepubertal children. 3. 3. Clinical and genetic investigation of hypochondroplasia and dyschondrosteosis

    Author : Giedre Grigelioniene; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Linear body growth is a multifactorial trait influenced by many environmental and intrinsic factors. Among the intrinsic determinants of body height, genetic and endocrine factors are considered to be the most important. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metabolic effects and long-term safety of childhood growth hormone treatment

    Author : Anders Tidblad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects and long-term safety of childhood growth hormone (GH) treatment. In order to achieve this aim, the different projects consist of a two-part clinical trial on metabolic features linked to GH physiology and GH treatment as well as two large population-based cohort studies with focus on the long-term cardiovascular and cancer risks in previously GH-treated patients.
