1. Surveillance of Antibiotic Consumption and Antibiotic Resistance in Swedish Intensive Care Units
Abstract : Introduction: Nosocomial infections remain a major cause of mortality and morbidity. The problem is most apparent in intensive care units (ICUs). Most ICU patients are compromised and vulnerable as a result of disease or severe trauma. One in ten people admitted to hospital is given an antibiotic for infection. READ MORE

2. Carbapenem resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Abstract : Carbapenem (imipenem and meropenem) resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is increasing, with global resistance rates approaching 20%. The most common resistance mechanisms are down-regulation of the porin OprD, and increased activity of multi-drug efflux pumps, primarily MexAB-OprM. READ MORE

3. Beta-lactam and metronidazole resistance in the Bacteroides fragilis group
Abstract : The Bacteroides fragilis group organisms are anaerobic gram-negative bacilli. Ten species are currently included in this group. Members of the B. fragilis group are the major constituents of the normal colonic microflora and the most commonly encountered anaerobic bacteria in clinical specimens. READ MORE

4. Chromosomal antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Abstract : The progressive increase in fluoroquinolone resistant N. gonorrhoeae and emergence of multiple antibiotic resistant P. aeruginosa are growing concerns among physicians and health policy makers. In N. READ MORE

5. Antibiotic resistance and antibiotic consumption with focus on Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Abstract : Aims: The general aims of the present studies were to assess the levels of antibiotic resistance, in relation to antibiotic consumption at the Karolinska University Hospital, Solna (KS) and at 11 other Swedish hospitals, furthermore to assess the role of the membrane protein OprD and penicillin-binding proteins in Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistance to imipenem. Methods: Resistance figures were retrieved from the microbiology service databases for the period 1989-99, at the 12 above mentioned hospitals, including their intensive care units (ICU). READ MORE
