  1. 1. Controlled axonal outgrowth and cell reactions to nanostructures

    Author : Fredrik Johansson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Contact guidance; neuron; axon; fibroblast; macrophage; polymethylmethacrylate; porous silicon; nanowire; magnetic; immunoresponse; nanoimprint lithography; haptotaxis;

    Abstract : The interface between living cells and artificial surfaces are highly relevant for biomedical applications such as implants and organized cell growth for tissue reconstruction as well as for basic science purposes. In the present thesis, we have studied axonal guidance on various nano-patterned surfaces such as polymethyl-meth-acrylate, porous silicon and on magnetically aligned Ni nanowires. READ MORE

  2. 2. Environment-Sensitive Multifunctional Drug Delivery Systems

    Author : Jian Qin; Mamoun Muhammed; Marcus Textor; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Abstract : Drug delivery systems (DDS) with multiple functionalities such as environment-sensitive drug release mechanisms and visualization agents have motivated the biomedical community as well as materials chemists for more than a decade. This dissertation is concerned with the development of nanoparticles for multifunctional DDS  to tackle several crucial challenges in these complex systems, including polymeric nanospheres which respond to temperature change, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles/polymeric composite for magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents and drug carriers, immunoresponse of nanomaterials and injectable magnetic field sensitive ferrogels. 3. 3. Mesenchymal stem cell regeneration and differentiation after anti inflammatory drug exposure

    Author : Maritha Kumlin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Traumatic and degenerative pathologies of the musculoskeletal system are common and often involve injuries of multiple mesenchymal tissues including bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Medical intervention is frequently initiated to relieve pain, restore biomechanical function, with aim to return to the desired level of activity as soon as possible. READ MORE
