2. Perinatal Energy Substrate Metabolism : Glucose Production and Lipolysis in Pregnant Women and Newborn Infants with Particular Reference to Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)
Abstract : Glucose is the most important fetal nutrient and the production of this substrate increases in the pregnant woman. In the last trimester the increased insulin resistance directs energy substrates to the fetus. Fetal growth is sometimes disturbed, often without an obvious explanation. READ MORE

3. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth
Abstract : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout. 4. CD64 (FcγRI) Expression on Neutrophil Granulocytes : A Diagnostic Marker of Acute Bacterial Infections
Abstract : Background. Newborn infants, especially preterm infants, have an increased susceptibility to serious and overwhelming bacterial as well as fungal infections. Symptoms of septicaemia in especially the very preterm neonates are vague and unspecific. READ MORE

5. Premedication for intubation in newborn infants; pain assessment, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Abstract : Preterm infants undergo intensive care during a vulnerable period with hemodynamic instability and a rapidly developing and immature CNS. Adequate pain management is essential, since pain experience might lead to acute physiological reactions as well as neurological and neuropsychological sequels. READ MORE
