  1. 1. Dissecting the Microenvironment of Urothelial Bladder Cancer : Therapy, Modelling and Biomarkers

    Author : Iliana Kyriaki Kerzeli; Sara Mangsbo; Tania de Gruijl; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immuno-oncology; Tumor immunology; MALT1 inhibition; Urothelial bladder cancer; Tumor microenvironment; Immunologi; Immunology; Oncology; Onkologi; Urologi; Urology;

    Abstract : The complexity of the tumor microenvironment (TME) impacts therapy responses and the survival of cancer patients. The scope of this thesis is to study the effects of immune modulation on tumor-infiltrating leukocytes, and to explore the TME of urothelial cancer to provide the research society with new knowledge and potential therapeutic targets. 2. 2. Exploring Cancer Drugs In Vitro and In Vivo : With Special Reference to Chemosensitivity Testing and Early Clinical Development

    Author : Anne von Heideman; Peter Nygren; Bengt Tholander; Rolf Larsson; Seija Grénman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cytotoxic drug; in vitro assay; drug development; phase I clinical trial; Oncology; Onkologi; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to investigate the utility of in vitro drug sensitivity testing to optimize the use of cancer chemotherapy and to assess the properties of a new cancer drug in a phase I clinical trial. Tumour cells from patients were analysed with the short-term Fluorometric Microculture Cytotoxicity Assay (FMCA). READ MORE

  3. 3. Towards Personalized Cancer Therapy : New Diagnostic Biomarkers and Radiosensitization Strategies

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the evaluation of biomarkers for radio-immunodiagnostics and radio-immunotherapy and on radiosensitization strategies after HSP90 inhibition, as a step towards more personalized cancer medicine. There is a need to develop new tracers that target cancer-specific biomarkers to improve diagnostic imaging, as well as to combine treatment strategies to potentiate synergistic effects. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hypoxia and Stem Cells in Normal and Tumor Development

    Author : Camilla Niklasson; Avdelningen för translationell cancerforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cancer; neuroblastoma; hypoxia; preclinical cancer models; ALDH; HIF-2α; PT2385;

    Abstract : Neuroblastoma is a childhood malignancy of the sympathetic nervous system and accounts for 15% of all cancer-related deaths in children. To understand the biology behind neuroblastoma, clarify timing of cellular events and expression profiles of proteins preceding neuroblastoma initiation, we need more relevant preclinical models. 5. 5. Radioimmunotherapy of experimental ovarian cancer with Astatine-211. An in vivo model for consolidation treatment in women

    Author : Håkan Andersson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Astatine-211; consolidating treatment; in vitro effects; monoclonal antaibodies; Mov18; ovarian cancer; radioimmunotherapy;

    Abstract : About 850 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in Sweden every year. In 75 % of the patients the tumour has spread outside the ovaries. The standard treatment is surgery followed by six courses of combination chemotherapy. In spite of a very high frequency of clinical complete responses the 5-year survival is not satisfactory.
