  1. 1. Mining induced seismicity in Sweden

    Author : Kristina Larsson; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mining and Rock Engineering; Gruv- och Berganläggningsteknik;

    Abstract : The virgin stress state in the rock mass is disturbed by mining, which leads to locally increased or decreased stresses. The rock mass in Sweden is generally composed of high strength brittle rock types, so the risk of seismicity and rockbursts (violent failures) increase with increasing depth of mining due to increasing stress levels. 2. 2. The impact of loading-induced stress variation on the seismicity of active faults

    Author : Yiting Cai; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stress variation; Coulomb stress change; subduction zone; Seismicity;

    Abstract : Surface loads such as the ocean, atmosphere, and continental water, constantly modify the stress field of the Earth’s crust. Most earthquakes occur at tectonic plate boundaries and such stress perturbations on the active faults at the plate boundaries may trigger earthquakes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterisation and Modeling of Discontinuous Rock Mass: Geostatistical Interpretation of Seismic Response to Fracture Occurrence, Discrete Fracture Network Modeling and Stability Predictions for Underground Excavations

    Author : Peter Starzec; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; keyblock predictions; induced seismicity; stochastic fracture network; geostatistics;

    Abstract : Geometric and mechanical characterisation of rock discontinuities is an essential constituent in deriving a reliable assessment of overall properties of crystalline rock mass. The knowledge about the occurrence, size, geometry pattern and intensity of joints/fractures is necessary to predict the performance of fractured rock as a fractured reservoir, or an underground transport and storage facility. 4. 4. Toward fully automatic earthquake detection and processing for tomography in the Hengill area

    Author : Frederic Wagner; Ari Tryggvason; Ólafur Gudmundsson; Roland Roberts; Steven Gibbons; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earthquake detection; local-earthquake tomography; Iceland; induced seismicity; geothermal activity; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the automation of seismic data analysis, in particular, event detection, quality assessment of detected events, and preparation of an earthquake catalogue for seismic tomography.The developed event detector uses back-propagation and stacking of a seismic trace attribute with a known velocity model to detect and locate events. 5. 5. Mine-scale rock mass behaviour at the Kiirunavaara Mine

    Author : Jessica Vatcher; Flavio Lanaro; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mining and Rock Engineering; Gruv- och berganläggningsteknik;

    Abstract : The interaction of the geological and mining environments leads to a variety of forms of rock mass behaviour, including seismicity and falls of ground. A precise understanding, however, of the role of geology in rock mass behaviour experienced by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s (LKAB) Kiirunavaara Mine remains unknown. READ MORE
