  1. 1. Microfluidics for High-Pressure Inertial Focusing : Focusing, Separation and Concentration of Micro and Sub-micron Particles

    Author : Javier Cruz; Klas Hjort; Aman Russom; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Microsystems; Microfluidics; Inertial Focusing; Particle Manipulation; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot mikrosystemteknik; Engineering Science with specialization in Microsystems Technology;

    Abstract : The birth of microsystems set the ground for technologies never imagined before, for it is not only the small size what characterizes the miniaturized systems, but unique phenomena arise in the micro scale. This thesis relates to one such unique phenomenon, inertial focusing, a phenomenon that occurs in microfluidic systems if very special conditions are met and that allows for fine manipulation of particles in fluid samples. 2. 2. Inertial collisions in random flows

    Author : Kristian Gustafsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Collisions; nonlinear dynamical systems; particles and aerosols; random processes; suspensions; turbulent diffusion; turbulent flows;

    Abstract : In nature, suspensions of small particles in fluids are common. An important example are rain droplets suspended in turbulent clouds. Such clouds can start to rain very quickly and the reason for this is still not fully explained, but it is believed that the turbulent motion in the cloud plays an important role. READ MORE

  3. 3. Stability analysis and inertial regimes in complex  flows

    Author : Iman Lashgari; Luca Brandt; Anke Lindner; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; non-Newtonian flow; global stability analysis; inertial suspensions; particle dynamics;

    Abstract : In this work we rst study the non-Newtonian effects on the inertial instabilities in shear flows and second the inertial suspensions of finite size rigid particles by means of numerical simulations.In the first part, both inelastic (Carreau) and elastic models (Oldroyd-B and FENE-P) have been employed to examine the main features of the non-Newtonian fluids in several congurations; flow past a circular cylinder, in a lid-driven cavity and in a channel. 4. 4. Droplet growth in atmospheric turbulence : A direct numerical simulation study

    Author : Xiang-Yu (李翔宇) Li; Gunilla Svensson; Axel Brandenburg; Wojciech Grabowski; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cloud micro-physics; turbulence; inertial particles; DNS; condensation; collision; coalescence; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : This Ph.D. thesis examines the challenging problem of how turbulence affects the growth of cloud droplets in warm clouds. Droplets grow by either condensation or collision. READ MORE

  5. 5. Laminar and turbulent particle laden flows : a numerical and experimental study

    Author : Seyed Hamid Tabaeikazerooni; Luca Brandt; Jeanette Hussong; Raffaella Ocone; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Suspension flow; inertial effect; turbulent duct flow; finite-size particles; Immersed Boundary Method IBM ; Astigmatism Particle Tracking Velocimetry APTV ; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Particle laden flows are widespread in nature and in industrial applications. Dust storms, geophysical flows, pharmaceutical processes, fluidized beds and blood flow are only a few examples. Both global and local properties of a particle laden flow may alter significantly in comparison to the corresponding single phase flow. READ MORE
