  1. 1. Nano-porous Alumina, a Potential Bone Implant Coating

    Author : Marjam Karlsson; Karin Caldwell; Mats Boman; Matteo Santin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemistry; Nano-porous aluminium oxide; Biomaterial; Hard tissue implant; Surface topography; Osteoblast; Biocompatibility; Neutrophil; Inflammation; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes a method of growing a highly adherent nano-porous alumina coating on titanium implant materials, a design which might be useful in hard tissue replacement. Alumina layers were formed by anodisation of aluminium, which had been deposited on titanium and titanium alloys by electron beam evaporation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Acute inflammation on model biomaterial surfaces : studies on proteins, neutrophils and platelets

    Author : Jonas Wetterö; Ulf Sjöbring; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Although most biomedical devices are non-toxic, disturbed acute and chronic inflammation and the lack of integration in tissues is a concern. At the time of biomaterial insertion, protein adsorption onto material surfaces precedes cell adhesion and is believed to alter unfavorably the acute inflammatory response and the subsequent tissue healing. 3. 3. Molecular and cellular interactions on noble metal nanopatterned surfaces − applications towards bone, soft tissue and infection control

    Author : Sara Svensson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nanotopography; noble metals; titanium; biocompatibility; osseointegration; inflammation; host defence; monocytes; infection control; antimicrobial; staphylococci;

    Abstract : Biomaterial-associated infection is recognised as one of the main risks for failure of medical devices. The presence of a foreign material in tissues has been suggested to compromise the ability of host cells to eradicate infection. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mechanisms of Osseointegration: Experimental Studies on Early Cellular and Molecular Events in vivo

    Author : Omar Omar; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Osseointegration; titanium; bone; gene expression; bone-implant interface; qPCR; inflammation; cytokine; chemotaxis; chemokine; integrin; bone formation; remodeling; in vivo; rat; immunohistochemistry; ultrastructure; biomechanical torque test;

    Abstract : The early cellular and molecular activities determining the early tissue response and bone formation at bone/implant interface are not fully understood. The general aim of the current thesis was to develop a model for studying the early molecular and cellular activities in different bone types, and in response to different implant surface properties. 5. 5. On the biological response to different biomaterials under normal and irradiated conditions

    Author : Louise Rydén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biomaterials; bone; fibrosis; hydroxyapatite; inflammation; irradiation; Osseointegration; silicone; soft tissue; titanium;

    Abstract : There are several challenges when introducing an implant into a host. Concerning soft tissues, major complications are fibrosis and capsule contracture, whereas for bone, failure of osseointegration may occur. READ MORE
