  1. 1. Charting Insect Diversity

    Author : Dave Karlsson; Fredrik Ronquist; Torbjørn Ekrem; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; insect faunas; biological inventories; citizen science; DNA barcoding; morphotype barcoding; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Abstract : Background: Despite Sweden's rich legacy in entomology, a significant portion of its insect fauna remains poorly studied. Addressing this and other biodiversity knowledge gaps, the Swedish government unveiled the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative (STI) in 2002, with the ambitious goal of documenting and scientifically describing all multicellular species in the country. 2. 2. Geographic variation in life cycles : Local adaptation and ecological genetics in a temperate butterfly

    Author : Olle Lindestad; Karl Gotthard; Sören Nylin; Christopher W Wheat; Greg Ragland; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; voltinism; local adaptation; insect; life cycle; seasonality; genomics; life history; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Conditions in nature change with the seasons, necessitating seasonal adaptations that synchronize the life cycles of organisms with their surroundings. Such regulatory adaptations must vary between populations to track local variation in climate and seasonality; this local adaptation is facilitated by locally specific seasonal cues, but may be hampered by gene flow and genetic history. 3. 3. Urban and rural environments from Iron Age to Medieval time in northern Europe : Evidence from fossil insect remains from South-Eastern Sweden and Novgorod, Russia

    Author : Magnus Hellqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Late Holocene; Iron Age; Medieval time; subfossil insects; Coleoptera; environment; climate; human environment; taphonomy; south-eastern Sweden; Novgorod; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Quarternary Geology; Kvartärgeologi;

    Abstract : This thesis presents and discusses results from studies in of subfossil insect remains of natural and cultural origin. Samples were obtained by coring in sediments or by collection during archaeological excavations. The aim was to reconstruct local environment and climate in rural and early urban situations from Iron Age to medieval time. READ MORE

  5. 5. Physiology and productivity of serum-free Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 insect cell cultures

    Author : Eva Lindskog; Lena Häggström; Spiros N. Agathos; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Animalcellteknologi; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanisms and factors controlling growth and proliferation in serum-free Spodoptera frugiperda Sf9 cultures as well as the implications of these factors for protein production in the baculovirus expression system. The physiology of recently thawed, low passage (Lp) Sf9 cultures, were compared to high passage (Hp) cultures at p>100. READ MORE
