  1. 1. Drug Diffusion and Nano Excipient Formation Studied by Electrodynamic Methods

    Author : Ulrika Brohede; Maria Strømme; Göran Frenning; Hans Leuenberger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Functional materials; drug release; electrodynamic methods; diffusion; Funktionella material;

    Abstract : New smart drugs demand new smart drug delivery systems and also new smart analysis methods for the drug delivery process and material characterization. This thesis contributes to the field by introducing a new electrodynamic approach for studying the drug diffusion proc-esses as well as the formation of a new type of drug delivery systems, the so called mesoporous nano excipients. 2. 2. Lecithin-Based Microemulsions for Pharmaceutical use - Phase behavior and Solution Structure

    Author : Christian von Corswant; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Food and drink technology; felodipine; solubilization; drug delivery; self-diffusion NMR; alkylmaltoside; microstructure; isopropyl myristate; triglyceride; soybean phosphatidylcholine; Microemulsion; lecithin; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : Microemulsions are thermodynamically stable, transparent solutions of water, oil and amphiphile(s). It is possible to incorporate large amounts of oil in microemulsions, which makes them interesting for use as a drug delivery vehicle for water insoluble drugs. A prerequisite for pharmaceutical use, however, is a low toxicity of the composition. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterization of the Mechanisms of Drug Release from Polymer-Coated Formulations using Experiments and Modelling

    Author : Mariagrazia Marucci; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; ethyl cellulose; Release mechanism; coating; polymer blend; modelling; ESPI; diffusion; osmotic pumping; SEM; single pellet; CLSM; hydroxypropyl cellulose; multiple-unit release;

    Abstract : The main objectives of the work presented in this thesis were to develop new experimental methods to improve the understanding of the release mechanism from a coated formulation and to develop new mechanistic models to describe the release process for pellets coated with a semi-permeable film. Another aim was to characterize the release mechanism from a formulation coated with films made of a blend of a water-insoluble polymer, ethyl cellulose (EC), and a water-soluble polymer, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC). 4. 4. Beta-amyloid processing and alpha7 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in Alzheimer's disease-related mouse models : interactive mechanisms with focus on new drug targets

    Author : Monika M Hedberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Accumulation of beta-amyloid (Abeta), neuronal loss and changes in neurotransmitter systems, in particular the cholinergic system, are consistent features of Alzheimer s disease (AD). Abeta is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of AD and it has therefore become a target of interest as regards a therapeutic approach. READ MORE

  5. 5. The effects of solid state properties on solubility and "in vitro" dissolution behaviour of suspended sparingly soluble drugs

    Author : Mitra Mosharraf; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacy; FARMACI; PHARMACY; FARMACI; galenisk farmaci; Pharmaceutics;

    Abstract : The solubility and dissolution behaviour of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sparingly soluble drugs is discussed in this thesis. The roles of varying particle dimensions, disordered (amorphous) solid structures and the coexistence of amorphous and crystalline phases, especially on the surfaces of particles with a crystalline core, are evaluated in this context.
