  1. 1. Grasping the Peripheral State : A Historical Sociology of Nicaraguan State Formation

    Author : Anders Neergaard; Sociologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; national arena; international arena; integrative capacity; repressive capacity; extractive capacity; international system of states; world capitalist economy; colonial legacy; peripheral state; nation-state; state formation; Historical political sociology; state forms; state arena; infrastructural power; despotic power.; Sociology; Sociologi;

    Abstract : The thesis has two aims. The first one is to contribute to the field of political and historical sociology through an understanding of the processes of state formation in a Third World country. The second aim is to describe and analyze the development of the Nicaraguan state from independence to 1990. READ MORE

  2. 2. Semipermeable membrane devices as integrative tools for monitoring nonpolar aromatic compounds in air

    Author : Hanna Söderström; Mats Tysklind; Per-Anders Bergqvist; Jochen F. Muller; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Environmental chemistry; air pollution; alkyl-PAHs; atmosphere; bioavailability; boundary layer; diffusive sampling; emissions; integrative; membrane; monitoring; nitro-PAHs; PAHs; particles; passive samplers; PCBs; plants; PRCs; release rate; sampler design; sources; SPMDs; traffic; uptake rate; wind effect; wood burning; Miljökemi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : Air pollutants pose a high risk for humans, and the environment, and this pollution is one of the major environmental problems facing modern society. Active air sampling is the technique that has been traditionally used to monitor nonpolar aromatic air pollutants. READ MORE

  3. 3. Integrative analysis of osmoregulation in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Roja Babazadeh; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Similar to other unicellular organisms, yeasts frequently encounter environmental stress such as heat shock, osmotic stress, and nutrition limitations, which challenge their growth potential. To survive, all living cells must be able to adapt to changes in their surrounding environment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Life Cycle Energy Optimisation: A multidisciplinary engineering design optimisation framework for sustainable vehicle development

    Author : Hamza Bouchouireb; Ciarán J. O'Reilly; Peter Göransson; Rupert J. Baumgartner; José Potting; Mario Hirz; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Life cycle energy optimisation; Multidisciplinary optimisation; Integrative design; Sustainable vehicle design; Functional conflicts; Vehicle aerodynamics; Battery energy storage systems; Robust design; Uncertainty propagation; Livscykelenergi; Fordonsdesign; Optimering; Tvär-funktionella konflikter; Farkostteknik; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering;

    Abstract : This thesis explores how the systemic-level environmental footprint of light-duty vehicles could be reduced through integrative design using the Life Cycle Energy Optimisation (LCEO) methodology. This methodology aims at finding a design solution that uses a minimum amount of cumulative energy demand over the different phases of the vehicle's life cycle; while complying with a set of functional constraints, thereby avoiding any sub-optimal energy demand shifts between the vehicle's different life cycle phases. 5. 5. Pathways linking sleep, neuroimmune signaling and pain: an integrative approach

    Author : Martin Flores Bjurström; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pain; neuroinflammation; inflammation; glia; central sensitization; cerebrospinal fluid; osteoarthritis; chronic postsurgical pain; groin hernia repair; sleep; sleep disturbance; perioperative; neurophysiology;

    Abstract : Background and objectives: Neuroinflammation is implicated in the development and maintenance of persistent pain states, but there is limited data linking cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inflammatory mediators with neurophysiological pain processes in humans. Study I aimed to investigate whether there are coherent changes in CSF inflammation associated with central sensitization (CS), and to evaluate potential differences in CSF levels of inflammatory mediators between osteoarthritis (OA) patients with disabling pain and pain-free controls.
