  1. 1. Infectious and inflammatory mechanisms in preterm birth and cerebral palsy

    Author : Bo Jacobsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; preterm birth; preterm labor; preterm prelabor rupture of membranes; intra-uterine infection; intra-amniotic inflammation; interleukin-6; interleukin-8; interleukin-18; monocyte chemotactic protein-1; cerebral palsy; antenatal risk factors; chorioamnionitis.;

    Abstract : Background: International studies of women in preterm labor (PTL) and preterm pre-labor rupture of the membranes (pPROM) have shown a significant association between microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC), some cytokines and chemokines and preterm birth (PTB). These studies have been performed in countries with higher incidence of PTB than that in Sweden. READ MORE

  2. 2. Sampling and Selective Detection of Peptides and Proteins Emphazing Microdialysis,Bio-recognition Assays and MALDI-TOF MS

    Author : Sven Kjellström; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cyclodextrines; protein identification; m-dispenser; push-pull microdialysis; microdialysis sampling; MALDI-TOF MS; Interleukin-8; Flow immuno assays; Interleukin-10; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : The use of microdialysis sampling and flow immunochemical detection as well as MALDI-TOF MS for peptide and protein analysis is described. Sampling of peptides and smaller proteins was investigated with different membranes. READ MORE

  3. 3. C5a Receptor Expression in Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock

    Author : Mia Furebring; Jan Sjölin; Per Folllin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; C5a receptor; granulocyte; severe sepsis; septic shock; chemotaxis; anti-C5a treatment; ex vivo incubation; C5a; interleukin-8; LPS; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : In patients with sepsis, the activation of the cascade systems, for example the complement system with the generation of C5a, is followed by a state of immunosuppression with impaired bactericidal capacity caused by suppression of the neutrophil granulocytes. To inhibit the C5a-induced systemic inflammatory and the following anti-inflammatory responses, different anti-C5a strategies have been successful in experimental models of sepsis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Interleukin-17 in non-allergic airway inflammation

    Author : Martti Laan; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; IL-17; airway inflammation; bronchial epithelial cells; neutrophils; T-lymphocytes; IL-8; IL-6; MAP kinases.;

    Abstract : Chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchial asthma and cystic fibrosis are common clinical disorders all characterized by airway neutrophilia. By releasing proteolytic enzymes and free oxygen radicals, neutrophils can contribute to the main features of these diseases such as airway obstruction, hypersecretion and remodelling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Exploration of Conditions Affecting Cytokine Production in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Author : Lina Thorvaldson; Stellan Sandler; Michael Welsh; Maria Holstad; Maria Faresjö; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell biology; Cytokine; Diabetes; Tumor necrosis factor-α; Interferon-γ; Interleukin-4; Interleukin-10; Transplantation; Pancreatic islet; Glucose; Regulatory T cell; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Cytokines are soluble signalling mediators within the immune system, and have been shown to be of importance in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). This thesis studied the production of cytokines in experimental models of T1D and during transplantation of insulin-producing islets of Langerhans. READ MORE
