1. Intestinal absorption of drugs : The impact of regional permeability, nanoparticles, and absorption-modifying excipients
Abstract : For successful delivery of orally given drug products, the drug compounds must have adequate solubility and permeability in the human gastrointestinal tract. The permeability of a compound is determined by its size and lipophilicity, and is usually evaluated in various pre-clinical models, including rat models. READ MORE

2. Biopharmaceutical aspects of intestinal drug absorption : Regional permeability and absorption-modifying excipients
Abstract : Before an orally administered drug reaches the systemic circulation, it has to dissolve in the intestinal fluids, permeate across the intestinal epithelial cell barrier, and pass through the liver. The permeation rate of drug compounds can be low and show regional differences. The thesis had two general aims. READ MORE

3. Membrane transport and the human small intestine : Relation to mucosal protection, intestinal anaphylaxis and nitric oxide
Abstract : The tightly adherent monolayer of epithelial cells that line the luminal side of the intestine provides a dynamic and highly regulated barrier to the passive and active transport of ions, water and macromolecules. Cathecol-O-methyl transferase inhibition prevents tissue degradation of catecholaminesincluding dopamine and intracellular carbonic anhydrase activity is an important regulator of ion and water transport in the small intestine. 4. Intestinal permeability : a parameter of mucosal dysfunction
Abstract : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to absorb nutrients and electrolytes, and to act as a barrier towards hazardous and non-nutritional substances. In the present thesis the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in animal models in vivo, in situ and in vitro. READ MORE

5. Drug Dissolution under Physiologically Relevant Conditions In Vitro and In Vivo
Abstract : The general aim of the present project was to increase the understanding of the in vivo dissolution of poorly soluble drugs and thereby improve possibility to predict in vivo solubility from substance properties. Increased understanding of the in vivo limitations of drug solubility could potentially also generate ideas for improved formulation principles for poorly soluble compounds and more relevant in vitro dissolution test methods used in formulation development.
