16. Studies of Experimental Bacterial Translocation
Abstract : One of the main obstacles to maintaining patients with short bowel syndrome on parenteral nutrition, or successfully transplanting these patients with a small bowel graft, is the many severe infections that occur. Evidence is accumulating that translocating bacteria from the patient’s bowel causes a significant part of these infections. READ MORE

17. Genetic variation of tight junction structures in intestinal inflammation
Abstract : The epithelial barrier facing the external environment in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is comprised of several components, including the tight junction (TJ) structures observed for the first time in 1963. TJ structures, which are multiprotein complexes composed of transmembrane proteins and a diverse spectrum of intracellular components, create a primary barrier to diffusion of ions, solutes, and water and they concomitantly prevent permeation of pro-inflammatory factors, such as pathogens, toxins, and antigens. 18. Aspects on Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Neuroendocrine Tumours
Abstract : Aspects on Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Neuroendocrine Tumours Background. Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NETs) originate from endocrine cells of the intestinal mucosa and pancreas. READ MORE

19. Minimizing Risks and Morbidity in Live Kidney Donors
Abstract : Live kidney donors are healthy volunteers who are exposed to major surgical procedure and physical harms with no direct therapeutic benefits. Efforts to minimize their risks and morbidity are therefore of utmost importance. READ MORE

20. Neurohormonal Modulators in the Parathyroid Gland. Localization and regulation
Abstract : The occurrence and distribution of neurohormonal peptides, neuroendocrine markers and receptors in parathyroid nerve fibers and endocrine cells are described, using immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization, image analysis and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Immunocytochemical studies revealed that parathyroid glands of chicken, rat, guinea-pig, cat, dog and sheep contained adrenergic-, cholinergic-, and peptide-containing nerve fibers. READ MORE
