  1. 1. Molecular Insight into Ion-Specific Interactions : Vibrational Sum Frequency Study of the Carboxylic Acid Moiety

    Author : Adrien Sthoer; Eric Tyrode; Paul Cremer; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; specific ion effects; carboxylic acid; fatty acid Langmuir monolayer; vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy; VSFS; Electrical double layer;

    Abstract : Ion specific effects at charged interfaces find numerous applications in colloidal sciences and play a vital role in many biological processes. Despite having been studied for over a century, starting with the work of F. Hofmeister in the 1880s, a comprehensive molecular  understanding remains elusive. READ MORE

  2. 2. Engineering carbonic anhydrase for highly selective ester hydrolysis

    Author : Gunnar Höst; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Lars-Göran Mårtensson; Per Berglund; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbonic anhydrase; specificity; hydrolysis; rational design; protein engineering; plasmodium falciparum; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : I denna avhandling presenteras arbete utfört med enzymet humant karboanhydras II (HCAII). Enzymer är en typ av proteiner som accelererar (katalyserar) kemiska reaktioner, vilket är nödvändigt för allt levande. Den naturliga funktionen för HCAII är att katalysera omvandlingen av gasen koldioxid till vätekarbonat, som är löslig i vätska. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the Electrolyte Induced Aggregation of Concentrated Silica Dispersions - An Experimental Investigation Using the Electrospray Technique

    Author : Ann-Catrin J. H. Johnsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Colloidal silica dispersion; aggregation; gelation; electrospray ES ; scanning mobility particle sizer SMPS ; synchrotron radiation small-angle x-ray scattering SR-SAXS ; electron microscopy EM ; dynamic light scattering DLS ; particle morphology; ion specificity; gel layer;

    Abstract : Gels are weak, solid-like structures that arise when colloidal particles aggregate to form a network of particle clusters. A variety of colloidal systems that are important scientifically as well as in industrial applications are capable of gel formation, e.g. globular protein solutions, colloid-polymer mixtures, and metal oxides. 4. 4. Plant Phosphoinositide Kinases. A Study of PtdIns 4-kinases and a PtdIns 4-phosphate 5-kinase

    Author : Tomas Westergren; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; regulation; plant phosphorylation; plasma membrane; lipid kinase; divalent ion; phosphoinositide; substrate specificity; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : Phosphoinositides are of particular interest in signal transduction processes as they can be sequentially phosphorylated and used as precursors for the intracellular messengers inositol trisphosphate (InsP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG) that in turn affects calcium levels and protein kinase cascades, eventually leading to a physiological response. The activity and regulation of PtdIns 4-kinases and PtdInsP kinase was studied. READ MORE

  5. 5. Effects of polyelectrolyte conformation, charge density and ion specificity in polyelectrolyte and polyelectrolyte-drug interaction

    Author : Andreas M. Hugerth; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Pharmaceutical chemistry; Farmaceutisk kemi; Physical and Inorganic Pharmaceutical Chemistry; fysikalisk och oorganisk farmaceutisk kemi;

    Abstract : The central theme is how the structural characteristics of sulphated polyelectrolytes and theirinteraction with counter- and coions determine the degree of polyelectrolyte self-association (gelformation), interaction with oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and polyelectrolyte-amphiphilic druginteraction in protolytic solvent medium. Such knowledge is essential for understanding and regulatingthe interaction between polyelectrolytes as well as between polyelectrolytes and a drug substance in apharmaceutical formulation and for its fate in the human organism.
