  1. 1. Diversification on an ancient Darwinian island : Evolutionary history of caddisflies (Trichoptera) and other organisms on New Caledonia

    Author : Marianne Espeland; Kjell Arne Johanson; Niklas Wahlberg; Michael Balke; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : New Caledonia; Trichoptera; island; biogeography; phylogenetics; DNA; dispersal; vicariance; adaptation; ultramafic; diversification; new species; environmental factors; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Abstract : Islands are either of continental or oceanic origin, and the biota of such islands are a result of vicariance and dispersal, respectively. New Caledonia, in the South Pacific, is a part of former Gondwana, but the origin of its biota is heavily debated. READ MORE

  2. 2. Island biogeography and population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard

    Author : Anna Runemark; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Podarcis gaigeae; inbreeding; predation release; polymorphism; island gigantism; the island rule; genetic drift; sexual selection; natural selection; island biology; Evolution;

    Abstract : Islands are cradles for new biodiversity and provide natural laboratories for the study of population divergence. In my thesis, I investigated the role of different evolutionary processes in the population divergence in the Skyros wall lizard (Podarcis gaigeae), a species where islet populations have strongly diverged morphologies. 3. 3. The Francisella pathogenicity island : its role in type VI secretion and intracellular infection

    Author : Lena Meyer; Anders Sjöstedt; Siobhan C. Cowley; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Francisella; FPI; Type VI Secretion; Igl; DotU; VgrG; Pdp; microinjection; phagosomal escape; intracellular replication; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Intracellular bacteria have developed various mechanisms to enter and persist in host cells and, at the same time, to evade the host immune response. One such pathogen is Francisella tularensis, the etiological agent of tularemia. READ MORE

  4. 4. Island-based Polygeneration Systems : On the Feasibility of Solar-Biomass-driven Distributed Concepts

    Author : Moritz Wegener; Anders Malmquist; Andrew R. Martin; Antonio Isalgué; Natasa Nord; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Polygeneration; Distributed energy systems; Biomass; Solar energy; PV-Battery; Small-scale energy systems; techno-economic analysis; Island-based systems; Energy Technology; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : The colossal risks and challenges posed by climate change require innovative solutions that must fulfil energy service demands sustainably. The concept of small-scale, biomass-based polygeneration (SBP) is one such technological approach, which optimizes locally supplied fuels to provide several energy services like electricity, heating, cooling, potable water, and/or bio-chemical products. 5. 5. “Closed Place, Open Word” : Reading the Postplantation in Earl Lovelace, Milton Murayama, and Ntozake Shange

    Author : Sally Anderson Boström; Michael Boyden; Christina Kullberg; Mads Rosendahl Thomsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; postplantation; island literature; plantation literature; Creole languages; syncretic culture; island studies; Earl Lovelace; Milton Murayama; Ntozake Shange; Édouard Glissant; English; Engelska; Literature; Litteraturvetenskap;

    Abstract : This dissertation focuses on three authors who came of age in the 1980s, Earl Lovelace, Milton Murayama, and Ntozake Shange, reading their novels set respectively on Trinidad, Hawai‘i, and the Sea Islands, as postplantation expressions. My definition of the postplantation builds upon the work of Édouard Glissant, especially “Closed Place, Open Word” where he delineates three phases in literary production from the Plantation: the first is chiefly oral and appears as an “act of survival,” the second is an attempt to justify the Plantation system and is marked by “delusion,” and the third phase is written by descendants of the Plantation in a “passion of memory.
