  1. 1. Chemistry: content, context and choices : towards students' higher order problem solving in upper secondary school

    Author : Karolina Broman; Eva Silfver; Dan Johnels; Judith Bennett; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; chemistry education; upper secondary students; meaningful learning; higher order thinking; problem solving; context-based learning; interest; educational choice; identity; kemididaktik; didactics of chemistry;

    Abstract : Chemistry is often claimed to be difficult, irrelevant, and uninteresting to school students. Even students who enjoy doing science often have problems seeing themselves as being scientists. This thesis explores and challenges the negative perception of chemistry by investigating upper secondary students’ views on the subject. READ MORE

  2. 2. Motivation, students, and the classroom environment : exploring the role of Swedish students’ achievement goals in chemistry

    Author : Anders Hofverberg; Mikael T. Winberg; Ewa Bergqvist; Ilka Parchmann; Corwin Senko; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Motivation; achievement goals; chemistry; goal structures; epistemic beliefs; autonomous motivation; pedagogiskt arbete; educational work; education; pedagogik; kemididaktik; didactics of chemistry;

    Abstract : The overarching aim of this thesis is to deepen the knowledge about students’ achievement goals in chemistry and how they relate to students’ epistemic beliefs (beliefs about knowledge) and to their perceptions of classroom goal structures (instructional practices that emphasize certain achievement goals). Achievement goals are defined as the purpose behind students’ engagement in achievement behavior. READ MORE

  3. 3. Reasoning with thermal cameras : Framing and meaning-making in naturalistic settings in higher education

    Author : Robin Samuelsson; Jesper Haglund; Maja Elmgren; Cedric Linder; Tor Nilsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics Education Research; IR cameras; thermal cameras; thermodynamics; phase transition; heat transfer; Resources framework; Social semiotics; teacher education; chemistry education; visualization; Fysikdidaktik; kemididaktik; värmekamera; lärarutbildning; termodynamik; fasövergång; lärandesekvens; Socialsemiotik; Resursramverket; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : In this Licentiate thesis, framed by the Resources framework and Social semiotics, I explore how students and instructors, investigating thermal phenomena with IR cameras, come to conceptually and epistemologically frame the naturalistic settings they participate in. Additionally, I look at how they productively employ resources , what barriers they encounter while reasoning about the thermal phenomena and how the semiotic resources of the IR camera relate to the framing and resources employed in their investigations. 4. 4. Redox models in chemistry : A depiction of the conceptions held by secondary school students of redox reactions

    Author : Lise-Lotte Österlund; Margareta Ekborg; Anders Berg; Christiane Funk; Astrid Bulte; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; science education; redox reaction; model; inorganic chemistry; organic chemistry; biochemistry; students conceptions; textbook; Other chemistry; Övrig kemi; didactics of chemistry; kemididaktik;

    Abstract : According to previous research, students show difficulties in learning redox reactions. By the historical development different redox models exist to explain redox reactions, the oxygen model, the hydrogen model, the electron model and the oxidation number model. READ MORE
