  1. 1. Asynchronous Algorithms for Large-Scale Optimization : Analysis and Implementation

    Author : Arda Aytekin; Mikael Johansson; Panagiotis K. Patrinos; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; convex optimization; optimization; asynchronous algorithms; algorithms; parallel algorithms; large-scale; big data; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis proposes and analyzes several first-order methods for convex optimization, designed for parallel implementation in shared and distributed memory architectures. The theoretical focus is on designing algorithms that can run asynchronously, allowing computing nodes to execute their tasks with stale information without jeopardizing convergence to the optimal solution. 2. 2. Analysis of large-scale metagenomic data

    Author : Fredrik Boulund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metagenomics; DNA analysis; big data; antibiotic resistance; hidden Markov models; high-performance computing; distributed computing; distributed computing;

    Abstract : The topic of this thesis is the analysis of large data sets of DNA sequence data produced from modern high-throughput DNA sequencing machines. Using such machines to sequence the genetic content of a microbial community produces a metagenome. This thesis comprises three research papers, all connected to the study of large metagenomic data sets. READ MORE

  3. 3. Asynchronous First-Order Algorithms for Large-Scale Optimization : Analysis and Implementation

    Author : Arda Aytekin; Mikael Johansson; Lin Xiao; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; convex; optimization; asynchronous; algorithms; parallel; distributed; large-scale; big data; software; serverless; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : Developments in communication and data storage technologies have made large-scale data collection more accessible than ever. The transformation of this data into insight or decisions typically involves solving numerical optimization problems. READ MORE

  4. 4. Web Applications for Large-Scale Decision Support : Preference Elicitation, Modeling and Visualization

    Author : Samuel Bohman; Aron Larsson; Bo Sundgren; Majlender Peter; Göran Cars; Øystein Sæbø; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; World Wide Web; Decision Support Systems; Data Visualization; Man-Machine-Interaction MMI ; människa-maskin-interaktion MMI ;

    Abstract : This thesis addresses the lack of effective and efficient technology design in current e-participation research by investigating two approaches that yet have not been explored to any great extent in the literature: decision science and data visualization. It is concerned with the problem of how to combine techniques from these two fields to achieve decision support in the context of e-participation; from preference elicitation and modeling to data analysis, visualization and final recommendations, such that it can provide value to practitioners. 5. 5. Statistical and machine learning methods to analyze large-scale mass spectrometry data

    Author : Matthew The; Lukas Käll; Oliver Kohlbacher; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mass spectrometry - LC-MS MS; statistical analysis; data processing and analysis; protein inference; large-scale studies; simulation; protein quantification; clustering; machine learning; Bayesian statistics; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Modern biology is faced with vast amounts of data that contain valuable information yet to be extracted. Proteomics, the study of proteins, has repositories with thousands of mass spectrometry experiments. These data gold mines could further our knowledge of proteins as the main actors in cell processes and signaling. READ MORE
