  1. 1. Distributed Stochastic Programming with Applications to Large-Scale Hydropower Operations

    Author : Martin Biel; Mikael Johansson; Lennart Söder; David Woodruff; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; stochastic programming; distributed; algorithms; large-scale; optimization; hydropower; software; julia language; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Abstract : Stochastic programming is a subfield of mathematical programming concerned with optimization problems subjected to uncertainty. Many engineering problems with random elements can be accurately modeled as a stochastic program. In particular, decision problems associated with hydropower operations motivate the application of stochastic programming. READ MORE

  2. 2. Convection in large scale numerical models : parameterization and forecasts of precipitation probability

    Author : Ulla Hammarstrand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the problem of including the effects of moist convection in the atmosphere in a large scale numerical forecast model and how to interpret and evaluate the predicted convective precipitation.Two methods for parameterizing convection in a large scale numerical forecast model are tested to find the most appropriate one for precipitation forecasts in the mid-latitudes. 3. 3. Analysis of large-scale metagenomic data

    Author : Fredrik Boulund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; metagenomics; DNA analysis; big data; antibiotic resistance; hidden Markov models; high-performance computing; distributed computing; distributed computing;

    Abstract : The topic of this thesis is the analysis of large data sets of DNA sequence data produced from modern high-throughput DNA sequencing machines. Using such machines to sequence the genetic content of a microbial community produces a metagenome. This thesis comprises three research papers, all connected to the study of large metagenomic data sets. READ MORE

  4. 4. Statistical and machine learning methods to analyze large-scale mass spectrometry data

    Author : Matthew The; Lukas Käll; Oliver Kohlbacher; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mass spectrometry - LC-MS MS; statistical analysis; data processing and analysis; protein inference; large-scale studies; simulation; protein quantification; clustering; machine learning; Bayesian statistics; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Modern biology is faced with vast amounts of data that contain valuable information yet to be extracted. Proteomics, the study of proteins, has repositories with thousands of mass spectrometry experiments. These data gold mines could further our knowledge of proteins as the main actors in cell processes and signaling. READ MORE

  5. 5. Statistical and machine learning methods to analyze large-scale mass spectrometry data

    Author : Matthew The; Lukas Käll; Fredrik Levander; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mass spectrometry - LC-MS MS; statistical analysis; data processing and analysis; protein inference; large-scale studies; simulation; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : As in many other fields, biology is faced with enormous amounts ofdata that contains valuable information that is yet to be extracted. The field of proteomics, the study of proteins, has the luxury of having large repositories containing data from tandem mass-spectrometry experiments, readily accessible for everyone who is interested.
