  1. 1. Anatomical studies of hypothalamic thyrotropin-releasing hormone : implications for motivated states

    Author : Emilia Horjales-Araújo; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The survival of every animal as an organism and species depends on three motivated states: ingestive, defensive and reproductive. Regulation of these states is coordinated by the hypothalamus through the coordination of three principal output pathways: behavioural, endocrine and autonomic. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hypothalamic neuronal circuits involved in the regulation of food intake and body weight : histochemical studies in lean rats and obese mutant mice

    Author : Matilda Bäckberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : AGRP; arcuate nucleus; BBB; CART; GABA; GABA receptors; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; hypothalamus; LHA; leptin; MCH; NPY; orexin; POMC; tubby;

    Abstract : Obesity is a major health problem because of its dramatic increase in prevalence and its association with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart diseases, hypertension and stroke. It is well known that signals generated in response to feeding behavior are integrated in the brain. READ MORE

  3. 3. Leptin targets in the brain regulating body weight : receptors and down-stream mediators of leptin in neurons of the hypothalamus and brainstem

    Author : Marie-Louise Håkansson Ovesjö; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : AGRP; antibody; arcuate nucleus; blood-brain-barrier; body weight; brainstem; CART; CRH; DMX; food intake; GABA; GAD; galanin; hypothalamus; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; lateral hypothalamic area; leptin; leptin receptor; MCH; NPY; obesity; Ob-R; Ob-Rb; oxytocin; paraventricular nucleus; POMC; somatostatin; serotonin; STAT3; supraoptic nucleus; transcription factor; vasopressin; VGAT;

    Abstract : Obesity is a disease which has become a global epidemic that is beginning to replace undernutrition and infectious diseases as the most significant contributor to ill health in the world. In particular, obesity is associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension and coronary heart disease. READ MORE

  4. 4. Brain control of energy balance : localization and regulation of proteins involved in the central control of food intake and body weight

    Author : Maria Collin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : AGRP; arcuate nucleus; brainstem; CART; GABA; Glutamate; GPCR; habenular complex; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; hypothalamus; leptin; leptin receptor; LHA; MCH; NPY; Ob-Rb; POMC; serotonin; STAT3; transporter; ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus; VGLUT1-3.;

    Abstract : Obesity has become a worldwide threat to human well-being and is now so common that it is beginning to replace undernutrition and infectious disease as the most significant contributor to ill health. Obesity increases the risk for aquiring serious diseases such as diabetes type 2, hypertension, coronary heart disease and certain forms of cancer. READ MORE

  5. 5. Development of central catecholaminergic neuronal systems in the lizard Anolis sagrei

    Author : Agneta Rehn; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; double labelling; immunohistochemistry; interplexiform cells; amacrine cells; catecholamines; development; retina; Reptiles; brain; Zoology; Zoologi;

    Abstract : Catecholamines, comprising the neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA) and adrenaline (A) are synthesized by specific enzymes (tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine ß-hydroxylase (DBH), phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT)) in the central nervous system. The development and distribution of different catecholaminergic systems have been described in both the brain and retina of the lizard Anolis sagrei. READ MORE
