  1. 1. The fate of airborne lead pollution in boreal forest soils

    Author : Jonatan Klaminder; Ingemar Renberg; John G. Farmer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Air pollution; lead; lead isotopes; peat; forest soil; forest plants;

    Abstract : Lead has a more than three-millennia-long pollution history in Europe. Metal production, burning of coal and use of leaded petrol resulted in a significant pollution of the atmosphere. As a consequence of atmospheric fallout, the Swedish boreal forest is strongly contaminated by airborne lead pollution. READ MORE

  2. 2. Heavy Metal Exposure in Early Life - Health and Labour Market Perspectives

    Author : Yana Pryymachenko; Centrum för ekonomisk demografi; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Metal pollution; accumulated exposure; lead pollution; GPA; education; earnings; infant mortality; cognitive skills;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of three empirical studies on the effects of exposure to heavy metal pollution in early childhood on a broad set of individual outcomes. The first study analyses how accumulated exposure to metal pollution during childhood affects long-run outcomes. READ MORE

  3. 3. The Use of GIS in Assessing Exposure to Airborne Pollutants

    Author : Emilie Stroh; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NOx; air pollution; GIS; Exposure assessment; Lead; NO2;

    Abstract : GIS (Geographical Information System) has become a valuable tool in air pollution exposure assessment studies due to its abilities to accurately model and estimate exposure for large populations and areas. The general aim of the work presented in this thesis was to investigate the factors that affect the validity and precision in the assessment of human exposure to airborne pollution using GIS. 4. 4. Quantifying pollutant spreading and the risk of water pollution in hydrological catchments : A solute travel time-based scenario approach

    Author : Klas Persson; Georgia Destouni; Aldo Fiori; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; water pollution; catchment; pollution risk; scenario analysis; uncertainty; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The research presented in the thesis develops an approach for the estimation and mapping of pollutant spreading in catchments and the associated uncertainty and risk of pollution. The first step in the approach is the quantification and mapping of statistical and geographical distributions of advective solute travel times from pollutant input locations to downstream recipients. 5. 5. Long-term changes of mercury, lead and persistent organic pollutants in arctic environments

    Author : Carola Lindeberg; Ingemar Renberg; Mats Tysklind; Ove Emteryd; Edvard Karlsson; Per Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lake sediment; time trends; chlordane; hexachlorobenzene; mercury; lead; soil; climate changes; Arctic; Greenland; Sweden; Swedish mountains; PCB; PBDE; pesticides; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap;

    Abstract : The Arctic represents a huge area with poor infrastructure contributing to limited possibilities to establish monitoring and research programs. From the investigations that have been performed we know that the arctic environment is affected by anthropogenic emissions from lower latitudes, but knowledge about underlying transport processes, the arctic pollution extent and the rates of changes are limited.
