1. Evaluation of biosensors and flow cytometry as monitoring tools in lignocellulosic bioethanol production
Abstract : The significant environmental impact of the current fossil fuel-based industry is a major concern for society. Consequently, various initiatives are being undertaken to establish a more sustainable industrial model. READ MORE

2. Fermentation of Lignocellulosic Hydrolysates: Inhibition and Detoxification
Abstract : The ethanol yield and productivity obtained during fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates is decreased due to the presence of inhibiting compounds, such as weak acids, furans and phenolic compounds produced during hydrolysis. Evaluation of the effect of various biological, physical and chemical detoxification treatments by fermentation assays using Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to characterise inhibitors. READ MORE

3. Techno-economic evaluation of integrated lignocellulosic ethanol production
Abstract : Sweden has claimed that it wants to have a fossil-free vehicle fleet in 2030 as a milestone of its ambitious goal for 2050 to be a country with a sustainable and resource-efficient energy supply without any net GHG emissions. Production of bioethanol from plant materials is one potential method of meeting this goal. READ MORE

4. Immersed flat-sheet membrane bioreactors for lignocellulosic bioethanol production
Abstract : The rising awareness of the environmental, economic and socio-political impacts of over-exploitation of fossil-based fuel and energy sources, have motivated the transition toward more sustainable and renewable energy sources. Lignocellulosic materials (e.g. READ MORE

5. Spectroscopic characterization of lignocellulosic biomass
Abstract : This thesis focuses on characterization of organic components and inorganic elements in lignocellulosic biomass. The chosen biomass models were mostly wood from conifers and straw from rhizomatous grasses but also forest-based residues and agro-based plants. READ MORE
