1. Taming of the BEAST
Abstract : Modern communication systems are designed to enable reliable and fast information transfer. Therefore, efficient channel coding and decoding strategies are needed, which guarantee sufficiently low probability of erroneous reception with affordable receiver complexity. READ MORE

2. Aspects of List-of-Two Decoding
Abstract : We study the problem of list decoding with focus on the case when we have a list size limited to two. Under this restriction we derive general lower bounds on the maximum possible size of a list-of-2-decodable code. We study the set of correctable error patterns in an attempt to obtain a characterization. READ MORE

3. On the Design of Error Control Coding for Wireless Communication Systems
Abstract : New wireless services such as mobile Internet, multimedia streaming and high speed packet data access are making their way to the market. Availability of low-cost equipment providing high transmission quality and efficient spectrum utilization is crucial to the success of these services. READ MORE

4. On Probabilistic Shaping and Learned Decoders with Application to Fiber-Optic Communications
Abstract : We live in an ubiquitously connected world whose backbone are optical fibers. Achieving high spectral efficiencies and hence high transmission rates requires a careful combination of forward error correction (FEC) and higher-order modulation. This is referred to as coded modulation. READ MORE

5. Error-Correcting Codes Based on Chaotic Dynamical Systems
Abstract : This dissertation treats a novel class of error-correcting codes based on chaotic dynamical systems. The codes are defined over a continuous alphabet whereas the information that is to be transmitted belongs to a discrete set of symbols. Simple expressions can be given for the encoders, and the codewords can be described by a parity-check relation. READ MORE
