  1. 1. Exhaled markers of oxidative stress in the airways

    Author : Mona Lärstad; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : exhaled air; exhaled breath condensate; malondialdehyde; 3-nitrotyrosine; ethane; pentane; isoprene; oxidative stress; airways; inflammation;

    Abstract : Breath contains a number of different molecules, some of which may have potential use as markers for oxidative stress in the airways during chronic airway inflammation. The major objectives were to develop and validate methods for quantifying five potential exhaled markers of oxidative stress: malondialdehyde (MDA) and free 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and ethane, pentane and isoprene in exhaled air, and to test the applicability of the methods. 2. 2. Serine protease inhibitors in the upper and lower airways

    Author : Camilla Hollander; Enheten för kroniska inflammatoriska och degenerativa sjukdomar; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; auditive system and speech; Neutrophils; audiology; Otorhinolaryngology; Medicin människa och djur ; AAT; Medicine human and vertebrates ; SLPI; cytokines chemokines; anti-proteases; audiologi; hörsel- och talorganen; Airway inflammation; Otorinolaryngologi;

    Abstract : Proteases and their inhibitors are implicated in the physiology and pathology of the airways. Protease inhibitors include those produced locally, such as secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI), and those produced mainly by the liver that can reach the airways via passive diffusion, such as alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT). 3. 3. Polyurethane - occupational exposure, biomarkers and symptoms

    Author : Margareta Littorin; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spray; polyurethane; nose; metabolites; lung function ; lower airways; inflammation; heat; glue; genetic polymorphism; di isocyanate; Antibodies; biomarkers; Occupational health; industrial medicine; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; symptoms;

    Abstract : Isocyanates may cause occupational asthma, rhinitis, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. However, the mechanisms behind initiation of the disorders and the relations between exposure and effect are insufficiently elucidated. Means to biomonitor exposure and risk would be valuable. 4. 4. Exposure, health effects, immunological markers and biomarkers of susceptibility among Swedish rubber workers

    Author : Lena S Jönsson; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Yrkesmedicin; arbetsmiljömedicin; industrial medicine; Public health; epidemiology; Folkhälsa; epidemiologi; Occupational health; Andningsorganen; rubber industry; polymorphisms; vulcanisation fumes; Respiratory system; nausea; headache; exposure-response relationships; biomarkers; symptoms; airways; eyes; TTCA; PAH; 1-hydroxypyrene;

    Abstract : Workers in the rubber industry have an increased risk of several diseases, such as airway disease, cancer and probably cardiovascular disease. The exposure is very complex; carbon disulfide (CS2) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) being two of the contaminants. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nasal polyps. A clinical study of endoscopic score systems and epidemiology

    Author : Leif Johansson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nasal polyps; score system; endoscope; epidemiology; airways; HRQL;

    Abstract : Introduction: Nasal polyps are a common disease, the etiology and pathogenesis of which are still unclear. For diagnosis, a nasal endoscope is essential, while for follow-up treatment, a reliable score system is necessary. The existing score systems consist of few score steps and measure only large changes in polyp size. READ MORE
