  1. 1. Ternary Block Copolymer Systems - Phase Behaviour and Phase Structure

    Author : Birgitta Svensson; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Theoretical chemistry; lyotropic; thermotropic; SANS; SAXS; scattering; semicrystalline; reverse micelle; micellar solution; liquid crystalline; phase diagram; phase behaviour; block copolymer; pluronic; poly ethylene oxide ; poly propylene oxide ; quantum chemistry; Teoretisk kemi; kvantkemi;

    Abstract : Ternary isothermal (25°C) polyoxyalkylene triblock block copolymer ((EO)x(PO)y(EO)x where x is the number of ethylene oxide, EO, segments and y is the number of propylene oxide, PO, segments) systems with water and p-xylene as selective solvents for the PEO and PPO blocks, respectively, were chosen as study systems in this thesis as these ternary systems are good model systems for the self-assembly of block copolymers. The phase behaviour has been studied at varied block copolymer molecular weight and relative PEO/PPO block ratio. READ MORE

  2. 2. Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in Micellar Solution and Lyotropic Liquid Crystals. Tools and Applications

    Author : Ruslan Sitnikov; KTH; []
    Keywords : NMR; NMR relaxation dispersion; NMR spectrometer; low NMR frequencies; NMR duplexer; NMR preamplifier; NMR lock; surfactant systems; micellar solutions; lyotropic liquid crystals; cubic mesophase;

    Abstract : Structurally, this Thesis is divided into two parts thatdescribe (i) the hardware development for NMR relaxationstudies and (ii) its applications for studies of the surfactantsystems.The developed hardware solutions allow to expand thefrequency range covered by conventional NMR spectrometers tomake NMR experiments feasible at resonance frequencies down to100 kHz. 3. 3. Study of the flow-induced structure and anisotropy in lyotropic liquid crystals for hierarchical composites

    Author : Adrian Rodriguez Palomo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Self-assembly; Lyotropic liquid crystals; SAXS; Hierarchical materials.; 3D printing; Rheology; Microfluidics; Birefringence microscopy;

    Abstract : Controlling the micro and nanostructure of materials is highly beneficial in order to tailor their physical properties. Extrusion-based 3D printing is a promising tool to produce hierarchical structures with controlled architecture. READ MORE

  4. 4. NMR diffusion studies on lyotropic liquid crystalline systems

    Author : Greger Orädd; Frank Volke; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Diffusion; pulsed field gradient; liquid crystalline systems; lipid lateral diffusion; cubic phases; peptide-lipid interactions; hydrophobic mismatch; permeability;

    Abstract : The pulsed field gradient fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance (PFG-FTNMR) method to measure translational diffusion coefficients in multicomponent systems has been applied to amphiphilic molecules forming liquid crystalline phases.By analyzing the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficients of water and amphiphile in a micellar system of N,N-dimethyldodecy lamine oxide (DDAO) in water it was possible to conclude that the micelles formed were polydisperse in size and shape. 5. 5. Sorption Microcalorimetry: Method Development and Applications

    Author : Natalia Markova; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lyotropic phase transition; hydrate formation; crystallization; sorption enthalpy; sorption isotherm; water vapor; isothermal heat conduction calorimetry; sorption; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : A double twin isothermal microcalorimeter has been designed and its performance has been tested experimentally. The calorimeter makes it possible to continuously and isothermally scan a solid sample in a broad range of relative vapor pressures at near-equilibrium conditions. READ MORE
