1. Amino acid transport and receptor binding properties in neuropsychiatric disorders using the fibroblast cell model
Abstract : Altered transport of the catecholamines and serotonin precursor amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan, might be one explanation for the dysfunctional neurotransmission implicated in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In previous studies, an altered amino acid transport has been found in schizophrenia and autism, when using the fibroblast cell model. READ MORE

2. Effects of ethanol on muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in nerve cells
Abstract : This thesis focused on the mechanisms involved in the effects of long-term ethanol treatment on mAChRs and their coupled-signal transduction pathway in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. All 5 subtypes of mAChRs were expressed in these cells. READ MORE

3. Influence of neuromodulators and mechanical loading on pathological cell and tissue characteristics in tendinosis
Abstract : Background: Tendinosis is a painful chronic, degenerative condition characterized by objective changes in the tissue structure of a tendon. Hallmark features in tendinosis tendons include increased number of cells (hypercellularity), extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation and disorganized collagen. READ MORE

4. Neuropeptides and neurotransmitters in keratocytes : importance in corneal wound healing processes
Abstract : Background: The cornea is the outermost transparent layer of the eye and it is responsible for the majorityof the eye’s total focusing power. Keratocytes are the resident cells of the corneal stroma and their function isto produce extracellular matrix components and to take part in corneal healing after injury, which may occurdue to trauma, infection or surgery. 5. Cholinergic receptors in human prenetal brain : presence, distribution and influence of nicotine and ethanol
Abstract : Events early in life, including exposure to various compounds, may cause disturbances in brain development. Both maternal smoking and alcohol drinking during pregnancy can induce preand postnatal death, cognitive and neurobehavioral disturbances. READ MORE
