  1. 1. Lignocellulosic Ethanol Production Based on Steam Pretreatment and SSF: Process Development through Experiments and Simulations

    Author : Per Sassner; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Process simulation; Energy efficiency; SSF; Enzymatic hydrolysis; Lignocellulose; Steam pretreatment; Ethanol production; Process economics; Flow-sheeting;

    Abstract : Lignocellulosic materials, such as wood, waste products from the forestry industry, agricultural residues and herbaceous crops, serve as an abundant and comparatively cheap feedstock with the potential to be used for large-scale ethanol production. However, the complex structure of lignocellulosic materials, the presence of various hexose and pentose sugars in hemicellulose, and the presence of various compounds that inhibit the fermenting organism constitute physical barriers that add to the production cost and make full-scale introduction economically more risky. 2. 2. Pyrolysis of biomass. Rapid pyrolysis at high temperature. Slow pyrolysis for active carbon preparation

    Author : Rolando Zanzi; KTH; []
    Keywords : rapid pyrolysis; pyrolysis; wood; agricultural residues; biomass; char; tar; gas; char reactivity; gasification; steam; active carbon;

    Abstract : Pyrolysis of biomass consists of heating solid biomass inthe absence of air to produce solid, liquid and gaseous fuels.In the first part of this thesis rapid pyrolysis of wood(birch) and some agricultural residues (olive waste, sugarcanebagasse and wheat straw in untreated and in pelletized form) athigh temperature (800ºC–1000ºC) is studied ina free fall reactor at pilot scale. 3. 3. Entrained flow gasification of biomass : On atomisation, transport processes and gasification reactions

    Author : Mikael Risberg; Kevin Whitty; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy Engineering; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : Since the energy consumption in the world is increasing together with an increase of greenhouse gas emission it is of importance to find alternatives to fossil fuels. Biomass is one of the alternative energy sources which is both renewable and CO2 neutral. READ MORE

  4. 4. Experimental Investigation of Performance, Flow Interactions and Rotor Forcing in Axial Partial Admission Turbines

    Author : Jens Fridh; Torsten Fransson; Björn Laumert; Jürgen Seume; KTH; []

    Abstract : The thesis comprises a collection of four papers with preceding summary and supplementary appendices. The core investigation solely is of experimental nature although reference and comparisons with numerical models will be addressed. READ MORE

  5. 5. Conceptual Thermodynamic Cycle and Aerodynamic Gas Turbine Design - on an Oxy-fuel Combined Cycle

    Author : ADRIAN NILSSON DAHLQVIST; Kraftverksteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Gas turbine; combined cycle; conceptual design; aerodynamic; mid-span design; through-flow design; oxy-fuel; SCOC-CC; OCC; gas turbine; Combined cycle; conceptual design; aerodynamic; mid-span design; Through-flow design; Oxy-fuel; SCOC-CC; OCC;

    Abstract : The world is today facing a serious problem with global warming, which is heading towards an appallingly high temperature level. The greater part of the overall climate science community agree that global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect, which depends largely on emitted CO2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuel.
