1. Determination of the thermal conductivity of the insulation in district heating mains : Field measurements
Abstract : This thesis concerns the development of a measurement method for determination in the field of the thermal conductivity of the insulation in buried district heating mains. The thermal conductivity of the insulation is calculated from the measured value of the radial heat flow through the heating main, the measured temperature difference across the insulation, and the dimensions of the heating main. 2. Constraining the top-Z coupling using the (ttWj)EW process with the ATLAS experiment : A search for physics beyond the Standard Model
Abstract : The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, having been confirmed by numerous experiments, is one of the most successful theories in physics. It describes all known elementary particles and their interactions through the electromagnetic, strong and weak force. READ MORE

3. Studies in the Geometry of Quantum Measurements
Abstract : Quantum information studies quantum systems from the perspective of information theory: how much information can be stored in them, how much the information can be compressed, how it can be transmitted. Symmetric informationally-Complete POVMs are measurements that are well-suited for reading out the information in a system; they can be used to reconstruct the state of a quantum system without ambiguity and with minimum redundancy. 4. Studies of collective phenomena in neutron deficient nuclei : by means of lifetime measurements, angular correlation measurements and the recoil-decay tagging technique
Abstract : The nucleus is a mesoscopic system that retains features from both the quantum and macroscopic worlds. A basic property of a macroscopic body is its shape. Nuclear shapes can be deduced from experimental data as they influence the excitation mode of the nucleus and hence the energies and lifetimes of its excited levels. READ MORE

5. Top Quark Pair Production in ATLAS
Abstract : The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the international particle physics laboratory CERN in Switzerland is currently the most powerful particle accelerator on earth. This thesis presents analyses of proton-proton collisions at the energy √s = 7 TeV, recorded by ATLAS, one of the detectors at the LHC. READ MORE
